Field note
Glass-mat interiors vs paper-faced gypsum in wet and humid rooms
Paper-faced moisture-resistant board is still paper. Interior glass-mat is still gypsum. They are not interchangeable finishes, and neither one is the tile backer in a wet shower. The drywall sub who treats “purple,” “green,” and glass-mat as the same humid-room SKU will own the photographed joints and the mold callback.
This page compares interior glass-mat to paper-faced gypsum in humid rooms that still get paint or wallcovering. It is not a tile-backer guide. It paraphrases public ASTM / GA / mill finishing notes. Pull the mill PDF on the submittal.
Two interiors, two ASTM families
Paper-faced interiors are ASTM C1396 gypsum board. Regular, Type X, Type C, and moisture-/mold-resistant paper faces all live here. Treated face paper and an improved core help in humidity. They do not make the panel a wet-area tile substrate. See choosing drywall type.
Interior glass-mat panels are manufactured to ASTM C1658 (glass-mat gypsum panels), with mills also citing the C1396 sections that still apply to the core. Fiberglass mat, face and back, instead of paper. DensArmor-type, eXP Interior-type, USG glass-mat interiors, and CertainTeed / PABCO glass-mat interiors are this family — Georgia-Pacific, USG, National Gypsum. See Products.
Two related products that are not this comparison:
- Exterior glass-mat sheathing (ASTM C1177 class, DensGlass-type) is a cladding substrate. Different fasteners, different joint treatment, not a Level 4 wall.
- Glass-mat tile backer (ASTM C1178 class) is a thinset substrate. If the elevation is a shower, bid tile backer or cement board the tile manufacturer accepts — not interior glass-mat hung like wallboard, and not paper-faced MR.
What “wet room” means on a drywall takeoff
High humidity is not standing water.
Paint-grade humid rooms — toilet rooms, locker dry areas, healthcare soiled utility that is not tiled, commercial kitchens outside wash-down tile, indoor-pool corridors the spec still calls gypsum — are where interior glass-mat earns its keep. Paper-faced MR is the cheaper humid-room habit. It is still paper. In a building that will see chronic humidity or a long prerock window, the spec often wants the mat.
Tile-in-shower / wash-down walls are not this article. Paper-faced MR in a shower is the expensive residential habit. Interior glass-mat sold as a wall panel is not automatically a tile backer. If the tile and panel manufacturers want C1178 or cement board, hang that.
Prerock / open building. ASTM C840, GA-216, and IBC weather-protection language do not let you hang paper-faced interiors until the building is closed in. Interior glass-mat is sold with a manufacturer weather window for installation before dry-in. That window is the mill’s, not a license to leave paper Type X on an open elevation. Shaftliner has its own glass-mat liner SKU — do not use interior wall glass-mat as 1-inch liner.
Residential production still lives on paper-faced 1/2-inch and 5/8 Type X, with MR paper in bathrooms that are not showers. Commercial W&C shops see interior glass-mat on healthcare, education, prerock, and interiors that must board before the envelope closes.
Hang is similar; the face is not
Application of gypsum board is ASTM C840 / GA-216. Interior glass-mat hangs on the same wood or light-gauge layout, same Type S / Type W class, same stagger. See how to hang drywall. Score-and-snap still works; cut clean. Do not peel the mat like torn paper.
Framing still has to be in plane. Glass-mat will not hide a rolled 25-ga stud. Directory: Steel stud / framing.
Cavity insulation is independent of the facer. Humid rooms may also be acoustic or rated walls — fill what the design names.
Finishing systems are the actual difference
This is the part of the bid paper-face production does not cover.
GA-214 (Recommended Levels of Finish for Gypsum Board, Glass-Mat and Fiber-Reinforced Gypsum Panels) is the level document for both facers. ASTM C840 is written around gypsum board; association and mill notes are explicit that glass-mat decoration is not a silent C840 paper-face copy. Follow GA-214 plus the board manufacturer’s finishing guide.
The mat has a different texture and a different suction than paper. Joint compound on the tape band and raw mat in the field will photograph under paint — flashing, telegraphing, a “Level 4 that looks like Level 3.” Mills and finishing notes converge on the same field fix:
- Embed tape (paper tape and ready-mix, or mesh and setting where that mill allows it — some soffits and glass-mat products want mesh and setting; read the folder).
- Coat joints, angles, fasteners, and beads to the specified GA-214 level.
- For paint-grade interiors, plan on a full-surface skim or the mill’s primer-surfacer system so the field and the joint take paint the same way. That is Level 5 language in GA-214, and it is what several interior glass-mat data sheets recommend before decoration.
- High-solids drywall primer, then the paint spec. A cheap PVA on raw mat is how you buy a second prime.
Do not assume a paper-face Level 4 rate, or that a spray Level 5 coating made for paper will hide mat texture. The mill’s glass-mat finishing PDF wins. Mock-up under occupied lighting.
Beads stay in the same family — Finishing — but they still have to bond to a mat. Use what the bead and board manufacturers both accept.
Commercial vs residential
Commercial W&C. Interior glass-mat shows up on prerock, healthcare, education, and any interior that will sit open. Price the board premium and the finish system as separate thoughts. A GC who says “it’s just green board” is describing paper-faced MR. Qualify it.
Residential production. Paper-faced MR in bathrooms and laundry is the everyday humid-room product. Glass-mat interiors are a spec item, not a production default. Tile showers still want tile backer.
Bid notes
- Separate lines: paper-faced interiors, paper-faced MR, interior glass-mat, tile backer, exterior sheathing. Five products, five ASTM conversations.
- Finish labor on glass-mat is a system (skim / primer-surfacer / high-solids primer), not “Level 4 like the offices.”
- Prerock only if the mill’s weather window covers the sequence you actually have.
- Rated walls still need the named product in the UL / GA-600 design. Glass-mat Type X exists; leftover paper Type X is not a substitution.
- Humid-room insulation and steel follow those designs, not the facer.

FAQ
Is paper-faced MR the same as interior glass-mat?
No. MR is C1396 paper-faced gypsum with treated paper. Interior glass-mat is C1658-class mat face and back. Different finish system, different prerock window.
Can I use interior glass-mat as shower tile backer?
Only if the tile manufacturer and the panel manufacturer both list that use. As a class, shower thinset wants C1178 glass-mat tile backer or cement board — a different product than interior wall glass-mat.
Does ASTM C840 tell me how to finish glass-mat?
C840 is the gypsum-board application spec. GA-214 covers levels for glass-mat. The mill’s finishing guide is what a paint-grade mat wall actually needs.
Why does Level 4 look worse on glass-mat?
The mat texture and suction do not match the joint-compound band. Paint photographs the difference unless you skim or use the mill’s surfacer system.
Can paper-faced Type X go up before the building is closed in?
Not under C840 / GA-216 / IBC weather-protection language. Interior glass-mat is the prerock product when the mill’s weather window applies.
Do residential production crews need glass-mat in every bathroom?
No. Paper-faced MR remains the common humid-room interior. Glass-mat is a spec and a prerock tool. Showers still want a tile backer.
