Gypsum-house will-call
Will-call is the short run: a pallet of Type X the floor burned, a box of Type S coils, a specialty bead, a fire-rated access door, a shaftliner that was not on the original load. Scatter is the planned load: boom or cart onto the commercial deck, trailer drop on a production house. Same gypsum house. Different cadence.

Scatter vs will-call vs “we’ll grab it”
Scatter / delivery. Board, stud, grid, and compound as the takeoff named, on the date the floor can take it. Commercial high-rise wants a boom onto the deck so hangers are not carrying sheet from the gate. Residential production wants a trailer drop, not a pickup-truck run for every lift.
Will-call / pickup. The shop’s truck (or a driver’s pickup) to the yard window. Works when the SKU is actually on that floor today. Fails when the national catalog had it and the branch did not.
Box-store habit. A consumer aisle is not a gypsum house, even when corporate families overlap. Contractor Type X, shaftliner, light-gauge stud, and ACT live at the interiors counter. Do not send hangers to a paint department for a listed core.
Account and credit live with the house. Public contractor portals exist so the shop can see orders; they are not a substitute for confirming a specialty mill on a will-call that has to roll in an hour.
What will-call is for
Typical will-call — not a SKU list:
- Extra board in the thickness and mill already on the floor (5/8 Type X commercial; 1/2-inch and sag-resistant residential)
- A short of steel: track, a bundle of stud, deflection track, a handful of clips
- Fasteners: the right Type S / Type W / S-12 coil, not whichever box is by the door
- Bead, control-joint trim, a carton of tape, a pail of setting compound
- One access door the MEP just moved
- A carton of ACT tile to finish a room when the mill matches
- Tools and PPE that belong on the other cart — production tools
Typical order, not will-call today:
- Shaftliner, Type C, 54-inch, glass-mat, abuse / impact, lead-lined, or any mill the listed design named that is not that yard’s house brand
- Specialty ACT (tegular, humidity, fire-rated, narrow grid)
- Fire-rated access doors in odd sizes
- EIFS mesh and stucco accessories the plaster crew did not stage
- Structural CFS that is not the interior drywall-stud pile
If the listed UL / GA-600 design named a core, will-call is not a license to grab “5/8 firecode” off the wrong pallet. Choosing drywall type.
Confirm before the crew is standing around
Call or portal-check the branch that will load, not the national aisle:
- Mill, thickness, width (48 vs 54), length
- Steel designation in mils / coating, not “20-ga” as a nickname
- Fastener class and collation
- ACT mill + edge + grid width as a set
- Access-door size, flange, rating
- Quantity the truck can actually carry vs what the floor still needs
- Whether it is staged for pickup or still in the warehouse
Send a driver with the ticket, the mill names, and the account. Do not send hangers to wait at the window; that is donated labor. Commercial scatter still beats a dozen will-calls when the takeoff was short on purpose.
Commercial vs residential
Commercial wall and ceiling. Scatter is the default for board and stud. Will-call is the specialty and the short. Boom time and deck access are coordination with the GC — a will-call pickup does not replace a missed scatter date. Mix on the ticket: Type X, shaftliner, light-gauge, ACT, mineral wool, rated doors.
Residential production. Trailer drops and small will-calls. 1/2-inch, texture, Type W coils. A production crew that lives on will-call for every house is a takeoff problem, not a yard problem. Townhouse and mixed-use with metal stud follow the commercial confirm-the-mill rule.
One national house feeds both markets. The floor mix is local. Ask.

FAQ
Is will-call cheaper than scatter?
Sometimes on a short. It is more expensive when hangers wait, when the SKU is not there, or when you burned a boom date. Price the labor, not just the ticket.
Can I pick up listed Type C at any branch?
No. Specialty cores are the classic miss. Confirm mill and thickness at that counter.
Do I use the box store if the yard is across town?
Not for the commercial package. Shaftliner, light-gauge, and listed board are interiors-yard products. Consumer board is not a substitution license.
Who finds the nearest FBM?
FBM. Use the branch finder on myfbm.com. This site does not publish a yard list.
Does a portal reservation mean it is on the floor?
It means the house’s system thinks so. For specialty SKUs, still confirm with the counter before the truck rolls.
