Lightweight gypsum: what the hang crew actually gets
Lightweight board is still gypsum. It is a core formulation that cuts panel weight so a hang crew can move longer and wider stock. It is not a different ASTM family, not a fire rating by itself, and not a license to hang leftover regular 1/2-inch on a 24-inch ceiling because “the light stuff sags less.”
This page is for estimators and crew leads. It paraphrases public mill class language (ultralight / lightweight interiors and lightweight Type X from USG, National Gypsum, American Gypsum, CertainTeed, and peers) plus ASTM C1396, ICC-ES AC417 for 1/2-inch sag-resistant ceiling board, and GA-216 / ASTM C840 for the hang. Two lightweights, two jobs
Lightweight 1/2-inch interiors. Paper-faced C1396 wallboard formulated lighter than conventional 1/2-inch. Many of these panels are also sold — or paired with a sibling SKU — as sag-resistant ceiling board that can run on 24-inch o.c. framing with water-based texture, where regular 1/2-inch wallboard cannot. That sag claim is the mill’s and, for some products, an ICC-ES AC417 recognition. It is not automatic for every light 1/2-inch on the truck.
Lightweight 5/8 Type X. A Type X core at reduced weight. Commercial floors use it so 5/8 hangs more like production 1/2. It is still Type X only when that mill’s product is classified Type X in the listed design. Some lightweight fire panels are proprietary enhanced Type X (a mill UL type). They are not a silent Type C and not a silent substitute for a design that named a different core. See Type X vs Type C.
Do not mix those two lines on one takeoff line. A light 1/2-inch house panel is not a light 5/8 corridor panel.
What weight does not change
ASTM family. Paper-faced lightweight interiors are still C1396. Fasteners, edge distance, and joint treatment still follow C840 / GA-216. Bugle-head Type S or Type W still dimple the face; the core being lighter does not let you punch paper.
Fire. Hours come from the design and the named core. Lightweight Type X belongs only in designs that list that product (or that mill’s UL type). Lightweight 1/2-inch regular is not a 1-hour board.
Sound. STC cares about mass, decoupling, cavity fill, and the seal. A lighter face is less mass. Do not copy an STC from a conventional Type X table onto a lightweight face unless the sound catalog tested that panel.
Finish. Tapers still tape paper. Lightweight cores can be easier to crush with an over-set screw. Depth-sensitive guns earn their keep. A Level 4 plane still photographs a wavy hang.
Width and length. Light formulation is why 54-inch and 12- and 16-foot production stock is livable. Width is still a joint-count decision — 48 vs 54. Length is still a butt-count and a stair decision. The core being light does not make a 16-foot 5/8 sheet fit a house stair.
Sag, ceilings, and texture
Regular 1/2-inch wallboard on 24-inch ceiling framing, especially with a water-based texture, is the sag the industry already knows. Sag-resistant ceiling board (some of it lightweight, some of it a dedicated ceiling formulation) is the product class written for that span. Manufacturer tables still govern orientation: long edges perpendicular to framing is the friendly default; parallel at 24 inches is a mill-table question, not a habit.
Insulation laid on a ceiling from above has a psf limit in mill and ICC-ES notes for these panels. Wet-spray cellulose on a panel that forbids it is a callback. Read the folder. 5/8 Type X (lightweight or not) remains the commercial ceiling default when the design or the span wants it.
Commercial vs residential
Residential production. Lightweight 1/2-inch — often in 54-inch and long stock — is the everyday wall and many ceilings. Confirm the ceiling SKU is actually sag-resistant if joists are 24 inches or a heavy texture is specified. Garage separations and rated walls still want the Type X the listing named, not leftover light 1/2.
Commercial wall and ceiling. Lightweight 5/8 Type X is a production play on long metal-stud runs. It does not change the steel-stud height table, the fastener schedule, or the design number. Unrated TI that stocks Type X for one-thickness logistics can use a lightweight Type X when the mill and the spec allow it. Rated walls still read the listing.
Bid notes
- Separate lines: conventional 1/2, lightweight / sag-resistant 1/2, conventional 5/8 Type X, lightweight 5/8 Type X, Type C. The yard will invoice them that way.
- Ceiling at 24 inches o.c.: name the sag-resistant product, not “light board.”
- Fire designs: the mill UL type on the edge stamp, not the word “lightweight.”
- Do not invent panel weights on a bid. Regional mills differ. Use the data sheet.
- Availability is regional. Lightweight Type X is not on every truck.

FAQ
Is lightweight 1/2-inch the same as ceiling board?
Only if that mill’s product is classified and labeled for ceiling / sag-resistant use at the span you have. Some light wall panels are; some are not.
Can lightweight Type X replace Type C?
Not as a class. Type C is a fire-core designation. Lightweight Type X is a weight class of Type X. The listed design names the core.
Does lighter board change screw spacing?
No. C840 / GA-216 and the fire design still govern. Do not over-dimple a lighter core.
Will lightweight board lower the STC?
It can, because mass dropped. Use the sound table that tested that panel.
Is lightweight a residential-only product?
No. Light 1/2 is the production-house default. Light 5/8 Type X is a commercial hang product when the listing allows it.
