How a drywall estimator reads a UL / GA-600 design
A fire-rated wall on the drawings is not “5/8 firecode both sides.” It is a listed design — a UL number, a GA-600 assembly, or both — that names board, layers, orientation, fasteners, studs, and often insulation. The takeoff that only counts square feet of Type X is how a drywall sub inherits a failed inspection.
This page is how an estimator and a PM read that sheet. It paraphrases public class language from UL Product iQ / the UL Fire Resistance Directory, the Gypsum Association GA-600 Fire Resistance and Sound Control Design Manual, ASTM C1396 (gypsum board), ASTM C840 / GA-216 (application), ASTM C1002 (screws), and manufacturer assembly libraries (USG, National Gypsum, American Gypsum, Georgia-Pacific, CertainTeed, PABCO). It is not a reprint of a UL design and not a substitution license.
Residential garage separations and multi-family demising walls use the same documents. Production house texture does not rewrite a listed fastener schedule.
What document you are actually holding
UL designs live in Product iQ. Wall designs are commonly in the U- and V-series; floor-ceilings, columns, and beams use other letter prefixes. Each design is a tested construction, not a menu.
GA-600 is the association manual. It collects fire-resistance and sound-control assemblies in GA numbering, with ratings, STC / IIC where published, and construction notes. Many GA assemblies correspond to a UL (or other lab) design. If the spec cites GA-600, pull the current edition — do not quote a photocopy from the last job.
Manufacturer catalogs map their named Type X and Type C products onto those designs. The mill PDF goes in the submittal when the design is proprietary to that core. The drawings should name a design number. “1-hour metal stud” is not a number. RFI it.
Read the sheet in this order
Open the design and take off in the design’s order, not in the order the warehouse stocks board.
1. Rating and use. Hourly rating. Bearing or nonbearing. Interior or exterior. Interior steel stud partitions (ASTM C645 / AISI S220) are not an exterior CFS wall. Exterior gypsum sheathing is a different product family than interior C1396 wallboard.
2. Framing. Stud or joist size, minimum thickness / gauge, maximum spacing, and whether the member is wood or steel. EQ drywall stud belongs only if that member is in the listing or the mill’s compatibility note the AHJ will accept. A 25-ga habit does not beat a 20-ga minimum on the sheet. Shaft and area-separation members are their own family — shaftwall.
3. Board type and thickness. Regular, Type X, or Type C (an industry designation on an enhanced Type X-style core — see choosing drywall type). Thickness is not a nickname: 1/2-inch Type X is not 5/8 Type X. Glass-mat, abuse (ASTM C1629), shaftliner, and MR paper-faced products appear only when the design (or a listed proprietary version) names them. Purple or green paper does not add hours.
4. Layers and which face. One layer each side is not two layers on one side. Count base and face separately. A laminated face (adhesive plus mechanical) is not a double screw pattern you invented. Column and shaft wraps list a sequence; skip a layer and the rating is gone.
5. Orientation. Vertical means long edges parallel to framing; horizontal means long edges perpendicular. Some designs require a direction. Some allow either. The hang habit on how to hang drywall — residential horizontal vs commercial vertical — does not override a design that drew the other way. End joints staggered, and over framing unless the design allows back-blocking, still apply.
6. Fasteners. Type, length, spacing, and edge distance. Type S into light-gauge steel, Type W into wood, Type G for laminating, ASTM C954 / S-12 class into heavier steel — Type S vs Type W. Length has to reach the member through the layers being fastened. Spacing on a rated wall is often tighter than the general C840 / GA-216 table; the tighter number governs. Recessed heads. Level 1 fire taping is not a license to skip a required tape layer (finishing levels).
7. Insulation. Required, optional, or silent. If the fire rating used the insulation, it is not an STC extra you can omit. If it is only in the GA-600 sound column, it may still be in the acoustic spec. Either way it is a takeoff line — insulation in the drywall number. Mineral wool vs fiberglass vs SAFB: the design’s product class, not leftover thermal batt.
8. Joints, openings, and the head. Perimeter treatment, control joints (GA-216), and head-of-wall are often other listings (UL 2079 joints, penetration systems). The wall design does not secretly include a dynamic deck joint.
9. Finish and tile. Paint level is GA-214, not UL. Tile in a wet zone is a backer problem. Cement board in place of the listed gypsum face is not a silent wet-area upgrade on a rated wall.
Generic Type X is not a substitution license
UL guide information for gypsum board is public: some designs allow Type X panels that meet ASTM C1396 Type X from more than one mill. That is a qualified interchange, not a lumber-yard swap. It does not let you:
- Use Type X where the design says Type C
- Drop a layer because the core is “better”
- Change thickness, width, or edge type (liner is liner)
- Ignore a proprietary product name (glass-mat interiors, abuse boards, constrained-layer acoustic panels, some shaftliners)
- Loosen fastener spacing, shrink fastener length, or switch Type S and Type W
- Swap stud gauge, depth, or spacing below the design minimum
- Omit required insulation or change mineral wool for fiberglass because the R-value “looked close”
- Hang horizontal when the design drew vertical, or the reverse
- Treat MR paper-faced or cement tile backer as the listed face unless that product is on the sheet
Substitutions go through the design professional and the AHJ, with the mill’s current compatibility letter if one exists. They do not go through the trailer. Products and Manufacturers are where the named brands live; the design still wins.
What the estimator should put on the takeoff
Separate lines, not one “rated drywall” lump:
- Design number(s) as shown, plus the mill product you will submit
- Board SKU by type, thickness, and layer (base vs face, Type X vs Type C vs liner)
- Extra fastener length and count on multi-layer faces
- Stud package that meets the minimums — steel stud / framing
- Insulation only if the design or the spec requires it — Insulation
- Joint treatment to the design, then finish level to the schedule
- Head-of-wall, penetrations, and control joints as their own systems
- Shaft, column, and floor-ceiling designs as their own takeoffs — do not copy a partition U-design onto a lid
Commercial W&C shops bid this package to a GC. Residential production still hits listed garage and townhouse walls; those crews do not get to keep a 16-inch Type W pattern when the design tightened it.

FAQ
The spec says “UL or equal.” Can I pick any 1-hour wall?
No. “Or equal” still needs a listed design that matches construction, rating, and the design professional’s acceptance. Equal is not a different layer count.
Can I use Type C everywhere the design says Type X?
Sometimes as a mill-listed upgrade — confirm that mill, that thickness, that design. Never the other way: Type X is not a silent substitute for Type C.
Does a UL wall design include the head-of-wall firestop?
Usually not. The partition listing and the joint listing are different sheets. See head-of-wall firestop.
If GA-600 shows an STC, is that insulation in my number?
Only if the wall on the drawings is that assembly with that insulation, or the acoustic spec requires it. The fire hour and the STC line are not the same takeoff.
Do finish levels live in the UL design?
Joint treatment for the rating does. Paint-grade Level 4 or 5 is GA-214, on the finish schedule.
