Veneer plaster on a drywall subcontract

A veneer plaster spec is not “drywall plus a skim.” It is a thin gypsum plaster finish on a veneer plaster base (the trade still says plaster base or “blue board”), applied under ASTM C843, with plaster that meets ASTM C587. The hang looks like gypsum. The finish is plaster. Price the wrong crew and you donated a plasterer — or you hung regular wallboard under a plaster that will not bond.

This page is for estimators, PMs, and supers on commercial wall-and-ceiling work (and the rare custom residential spec that still names veneer). It is not a plastering textbook and not a production-house texture guide. GA-214 levels describe joint-compound finishes on gypsum panel products. Veneer is a different specified finish. Three finishes that get conflated on a takeoff

Tape-and-finish gypsum (the default drywall subcontract). Paper-faced or glass-mat panels per ASTM C1396 (glass-mat interiors have their own product standards), hung per ASTM C840 / GA-216, finished to a GA-214 level. That is how to hang drywall plus knives or ATF.

Veneer plaster. Special gypsum base with a face formulated to take veneer plaster, joints treated the way the veneer system requires, then a thin plaster coat (one-coat or two-coat, as the spec names). Application standard: ASTM C843. Product standard for the plaster: ASTM C587. Framing still has to be in plane — steel stud limiting height does not go away because the finish is plaster.

Level 5 joint-compound skim on regular board. A full-surface compound skim is still drywall finishing. It is not veneer plaster, does not use C587 material, and does not satisfy a spec that named veneer. Do not “equals” them in a clarification.

If Division 09 says veneer, the takeoff is plaster base + plaster + a plasterer (or a drywall shop that actually plasters). If it says Level 5, it is compound. If it says three-coat plaster, it is lath and conventional plaster — qualify it out unless that is your trade.

What the documents are buying

Read the finish schedule and the gypsum / plaster spec section. Words that should stop a production taper’s rate:

Base is not wallboard. Regular C1396 interior board is made to take joint compound and paint. Veneer base is made to take veneer plaster. Substituting leftover Type X because “it is 5/8” is a bond failure, not a savings. Choosing drywall type still applies for thickness, Type X vs Type C, and listed designs — fire rating comes from the UL / GA-600 design, not from the plaster coat.

Joints. Veneer systems treat joints so the plaster coat sees a plane, not a taped drywall joint competing with the plaster. Mesh vs paper, setting compound vs plaster at the joint, and whether joints are pre-filled are system notes. Pull current mill literature (USG and peers at Manufacturers). Do not trowel plaster over a residential paper-tape sequence.

One-coat vs two-coat. Those are specified systems with different thickness and labor, not a quality adjective. If the spec is silent, RFI. Do not assume one coat because the wall is “just a corridor.”

Environment. C843 and mill notes expect a weathertight building, dry framing, and temperature held for plaster application and set. Unvented temporary heat and wet lumber fail plaster the same way they fail joint compound. Veneer is less forgiving of a cold, wet deck than a production texture crew is used to.

Abuse and hardness. Architects specify veneer because the face is denser than a Level 4 compound wall. That is not a substitute for an ASTM C1629 abuse or impact panel if the spec also named that board. Stack the requirements; do not pick one.

Commercial W&C vs residential

Commercial wall-and-ceiling. Veneer still shows up in education, healthcare, civic, and some high-end interiors. The shop that sells metal stud, board, and ACT may not sell plaster. Bid it as a plaster line with a plasterer, or joint-venture, or qualify: gypsum tape-and-finish only; veneer by others. Framing and hang of the base can stay with the drywall crew if the plasterer will accept the hang — write that interface (plane, fastener depth, joint treatment responsibility) in the proposal.

Rated partitions and shaftwall do not change because the finish is veneer. The listed design still names layers and fasteners. Plaster is not a silent extra fire layer unless the design says so.

Residential production. Production houses do not veneer. Custom and high-end remodel sometimes do. Do not let a finish schedule’s “smooth plaster look” become veneer in the number without a spec citation. A Level 5 skim plus paint is the usual residential stand-in — and it is still drywall. If the documents truly name veneer plaster, it is a specialty crew, not Saturday overtime for the taper.

What to count (and what to RFI)

Count on the takeoff, without inventing a rate:

  1. Plaster-base footage separate from regular wallboard. Different SKU, different mill, different waste.
  2. Plaster system (one-coat or two-coat) as a finish line, not a GA-214 level.
  3. Accessories the plaster system wants — not automatically the same vinyl bead the tape crew stocks. Confirm corner, control-joint, and casing-bead compatibility.
  4. Control joints still belong on long planes. Location is the design professional’s; GA-216 spacing logic for gypsum membranes still needs an answer when drawings are silent.
  5. Listed design if the wall is rated. Veneer does not waive Type X, layer count, or fastener spacing.

RFI when the spec mixes “Level 5” and “veneer plaster” in the same room, when the board schedule says regular wallboard and the finish schedule says veneer, or when a fire design names a joint-compound finish and the interior design names plaster.

FAQ

Can we hang regular Type X and veneer over it?

Only if the plaster manufacturer and the spec allow that substrate. Default assumption is veneer plaster base. Regular board is the wrong face for C587 plaster unless the current mill sheet says otherwise.

Is veneer faster than Level 5?

It can be, in a shop set up for it. It is not faster if you have to import a plasterer and hold temperature for set. Bid the crew you have.

Does veneer replace an abuse-rated panel?

No. ASTM C1629 is a panel classification. Veneer is a finish. Spec both if both were specified.

Who inspects it?

The plaster standard (C843) and the mill’s appearance notes — not GA-214 Level 4 raking-light language copied from a drywall punch. Write the inspection standard in the submittal.
