Heat, moisture, and winter hanging

Winter does not fail gypsum because the crew “cannot hang in the cold.” It fails because the building is not closed in, the heat is the wrong kind, and the joint compound is asked to dry in air that is either wet, freezing, or blasting hot on one wall. ASTM C840 and GA-216 are the application standards. Manufacturer environmental notes (USG, National Gypsum, and peers) say the same class of thing: dry framing, a weathertight envelope, and temperature held for joint treatment until it is dry.

This page is for supers and PMs who get pulled onto an open deck in January. It is not a homeowner space-heater guide. Sequence of hang itself is how to hang drywall. What follows is the moisture and heat problem that shows up as finish defects months later.

What the standards actually ask for

Paraphrase, then pull the current GA-216 / C840 and the compound mill’s sheet:

Those are application conditions, not a production suggestion. Compound that freezes in the bucket or on the wall is a different product than the one you submitted. Board that took rain or snow is not interior C1396 wallboard anymore; it is a replacement.

Prerock and glass-mat interiors are the exceptions the mill listed for open or humid conditions — not a license to hang paper-faced Type X on an elevation with no windows. Shaftliner in an open shaft is the same rule: glass-mat liner if it will sit in weather; paper liner is not a rainscreen.

Closed-in is not “the heat is on”

A building that still lacks windows, roof edges, or a working vapor/air line is an exterior. Temporary poly on the openings is a job-site shelter, not an envelope. If you can see daylight at the head-of-wall, interior paper board does not belong on that stud.

Temporary heat is its own specification:

Unvented combustion heaters (propane salamanders and cousins) dump water vapor into the room. Burning fuel makes moisture. You raise temperature and relative humidity at the same time. Joint compound stays wet, metal sweats, stored board picks up moisture, then the crew turns the heat up and flash-dries the face. That is tape bond failure, shrinkage cracks, and delayed finish levels in one move.

Indirect-fired and electric heat avoid putting combustion products in the space. They still have to be even. A blast on one corridor wall and a dead 35°F room behind the next door is how you get a hard crust over wet mud.

Night setbacks below the 50°F joint-treatment floor reset the clock. The 48 hours is continuous until dry, not “it was 55 at lunch.”

Do not point a heater at fresh compound. Do not tent a room with no exhaust. Moisture has to leave.

Board, framing, and what actually cracks later

Wet wood. Residential production hangs on lumber that is still moving. Fill a winter house with unvented heat, tape it, then let the wood dry when the HVAC finally runs — fastener pops and ridge joints. That is not “bad screws.” It is framing moisture the hang standard told you not to cover. Commercial steel stud does not shrink like lumber, but it does sweat when cold steel meets wet air. Board on sweating track is a wet hang.

Stored board. Stacks in the snow, on wet decks, or against an open slab edge pick up moisture from the bottom. Factory paper that was wet and then frozen is a delamination risk. Store off the floor, under cover, same as the mill note you already have in the submittal. Wet board is a reject, not a dry-in-place experiment.

Compound. Setting-type (hot mud) still needs the temperature floor; it is not a freeze-proof shortcut. Ready-mix that froze in the trailer is scrap. Fast dry in hot, dry, windy temporary heat causes rim cracks and tape that photographs after paint. Slow dry in cold, wet air delays the next coat, invites mold on paper, and keeps the GC from believing you are “almost done.”

Finish. GA-214 levels assume a dry, stable substrate. Level 4 in critical light will show every winter joint that moved after you left. Texture in residential production hides some of it and none of the pops.

Sequence when the GC wants board before close-in

Qualify it in writing.

If the GC still wants paper Type X on an open floor, that is a delay and a board-replacement risk on them. Put it in the daily report. Do not invent a winter production rate to make the schedule true.

IMP and other envelope skins, once they are closed and sealed, can be the weathertight line that lets interiors start. An unfinished panel elevation is not that line.

Commercial vs residential

Commercial W&C. TI in an occupied tower can be heated and dry in January. New core-and-shell in the same month may still be an open garage. The hang crew is the same; the environmental condition is not. Metal stud, board type, and finish level stay on the takeoff — winter does not change the UL design. It can stop you from hanging it.

Residential production. Winter houses are the classic callback factory: green lumber, poly on window holes, salamander in the living room, tape on Friday, heat shut off over the weekend. Production schedule is not a waiver of C840. If the house is not closed, you are hanging a moisture problem.

FAQ

Can we hang if it is below 50°F if we use hot mud?

Joint treatment still wants the GA-216 / C840 temperature floor until dry. Setting compound is not a freeze waiver. Heat the space or wait.

Are propane salamanders acceptable temporary heat?

They heat. They also add moisture. Indirect-fired or electric is the class that does not dump combustion water into the finish air. If combustion heat is all you have, you still have to ventilate the water out — and you still have to stay above the temperature floor.

The framing is steel. Does winter moisture still matter?

Yes. Steel does not shrink like wet lumber, but it condenses. Wet track and wet board are still a C840 problem. See steel stud framing basics.

Can we tape during the day and let it freeze at night?

No. Continuous temperature until dry. A night freeze is a failed coat.

Is prerock a way around close-in?

Only with the glass-mat (or other) product the mill listed for that exposure. Paper Type X on an open elevation is not prerock.
