Field note

Cement board over drywall — when it belongs on the takeoff

Cement board is a tile substrate, not a waterproofing trick you screw over finished drywall. ASTM C1325 (cementitious backer units) and, where specified, ASTM C1288 (fiber-cement interior substrate) describe the panel. Application follows the backer mill, the tile manufacturer, and the TCNA handbook — not a drywall coil and paper tape. Gypsum behind that stack is still ASTM C1396 board hung per ASTM C840 / GA-216. A fire hour still comes from a UL / GA-600 design, not from extra cement.

This page is for estimators, PMs, and supers who decide whether the wet wall is backer only, gypsum only (painted), or a listed stack. It sits next to MR board vs tile backer. Commercial restrooms and residential showers are different rooms. Neither is “green board plus cement board because moisture.”

Not a handbook reprint. This article is original Drywall Insider editorial. It is not a reprint of the Gypsum Construction Handbook. USG owns that book. Use the current official edition at USG’s handbook page and current USG product literature from usg.com for manufacturer procedures. Drywall Insider does not host that PDF.

The wrong stack

Paper-faced gypsum — regular or moisture-resistant — is the wrong tile backer in a wet shower or tub surround. That is Gypsum Association and mill wet-area language, not a shop preference. Cement board, coated glass-mat tile backer (ASTM C1178), or another backer the tile manufacturer accepts is the substrate in the fixture zone.

Do not treat cement board over finished drywall as a repair for hanging gypsum in a shower. You added weight, a second fastener schedule, and a cavity that can still wet the gypsum if water gets behind the tile. In a shower, the usual right move is backer to the framing in the wet zone, gypsum on painted walls outside it — choosing drywall type.

Do not use gypsum as a shim behind cement board to steal thickness. Fasteners have to reach framing with the penetration the backer mill names. Screwing cement board only into gypsum core is not a backer install.

Do not finish cement board to a GA-214 paint level and call it a corridor wall. Alkali-resistant mesh and setting mortar are the joint treatment for tile; paper tape and all-purpose compound are not the tile bond line.

When a gypsum + backer stack does show up

Legitimate stacks are specified, not improvised.

Rated wall, tile on one face. A corridor or demising wall may be a listed gypsum assembly with tile in a restroom on one side. The UL design names gypsum layers, studs, and fasteners. Tile backer is either part of that design, an added layer the design professional accepted, or a replacement of the face layer. Read the design — reading UL / GA-600. Do not add a layer that changes the listing, and do not omit a Type X face because “cement board is noncombustible.” Noncombustible is not the tested hour.

Painted field, tiled wainscot. Commercial toilet rooms often want gypsum (MR or abuse, ASTM C1629 when named) above a tiled wet zone. The takeoff is two substrates on the same stud: backer to the wainscot height, gypsum above, with a transition both specs survive. Steel stud plane still matters; a rolled stud photographs through tile as surely as through Level 4.

Dry tile. Cement board may be specified over gypsum for tile in a dry location. Fasten through to framing. Confirm weight on wood studs and on light-gauge limiting height.

Remodel overlay. Covering existing gypsum with backer only works if fasteners hit framing, the existing board is sound and dry, added thickness is accepted at doors and fixtures, and the mill allows the use. A failed shower with rotten gypsum is tear-off, not overlay.

Coated glass-mat tile backer is not cement board and not interior paper MR. Exterior glass-mat sheathing is not a shower panel. Keep those families apart — Products, Manufacturers.

How each side is hung

Gypsum (painted rooms and dry zones). How to hang drywall: Type S to light-gauge steel, Type W to wood, spacing from C840 / GA-216 and the fire design. Finish to the specified GA-214 level. MR paper is still paper; it is not the shower.

Cement backer. Fastener class is the backer manufacturer’s — typically corrosion-resistant screws for that panel, not the drywall coil. Spacing and edge distance are mill tables. Leave the gap at tub and shower receptors the mill draws. Joints: alkali-resistant mesh and the mortar the mill and TCNA name.

Waterproofing. Liquid or sheet membranes go over a suitable backer when the documents say so. Membrane does not convert gypsum into a shower pan. Steam rooms, pools, and gang showers follow the wet-area spec, not a house bathroom habit.

Commercial W&C vs residential production

Commercial wall-and-ceiling. Restroom, kitchen, soiled-utility, and locker wet walls are bid lines: backer footage, corrosion-resistant fasteners, mesh, and often waterproofing that may sit with tile, not drywall. Abuse-rated gypsum in the painted restroom field is a separate line. Do not bury cement board in the Type X unit rate. Rated demising still follows the gypsum listing on the dry side.

Residential production. Tile backer belongs where tile actually goes — shower and tub surround, sometimes a backsplash if the documents say backer. Painted bath walls may be regular or MR gypsum. Hanging MR on every bathroom wall and then cement board over it in the shower is extra material and the wrong wet-area system.

Takeoff checklist

  1. Wet zone vs painted zone — two products, two hang methods.
  2. Listed design if the wall is rated — backer cannot silently replace a named gypsum face.
  3. Fasteners: backer screws to framing, length through all layers.
  4. Joints: mortar and alkali-resistant mesh on backer; compound and tape on gypsum.
  5. Who owns waterproofing and tile — write it.
  6. Weight and plane on light-gauge studs and on remodel walls.

FAQ

Can we hang cement board over green board in a shower to “make it right”?

Not as a default fix. Tear out wet-zone gypsum and hang backer to framing, or follow a mill overlay the documents accept. Two wet-sensitive layers are not a system.

Does cement board give us a fire rating by itself?

No. The hour is the tested design. Cement board in front of gypsum may help or may void the listing. Read the UL sheet.

Is glass-mat tile backer the same bid line as cement board?

No. Different ASTM family, different mill. Spec which one.

Who tapes the cement board?

The backer installer, with materials the mill named — usually not the production taper’s paper-tape run.
