Glass-mat gypsum sheathing as a product

Glass-mat sheathing is a cladding substrate. It is not interior wallboard, not a paint-grade face, and not a weather-resistive barrier unless that specific product and joint treatment are listed as a WRB system. Treating DensGlass-class board like 5/8 Type X in a corridor is how a shop tapes the elevation and still does not own the envelope.

What C1177 is (and is not)

ASTM C1177 is the material spec for glass-mat gypsum sheathing: noncombustible water-resistant gypsum core, glass mat face and back (partially or fully embedded), made as an exterior substrate for a weather barrier. It tests flexural strength, humidified deflection, nail-pull, water resistance, hardness, and dimensions. Type X glass-mat sheathing is the fire-resistive classification inside that spec — a greater fire resistance than regular C1177 sheathing, still not a UL wall by itself.

Application is C1280 / GA-253, not interior C840 / GA-216. Fastener type, spacing, edge distance, and joint stagger come from those documents, the fire design if the exterior wall is rated, and the mill. Interior hang habits do not travel. Corrosion-resistant fasteners — Grabber class sheathing screws, often ASTM C954 self-drilling into exterior CFS. Weather window vs WRB

C1177 does not assign a universal exposure time. Mills do. Glass-mat sheathing in this class is commonly sold with a multi-month weather window (12-month mill warranties are typical language on current DensGlass-class and peer data sheets). That window is normal construction weather, not a finished envelope, not standing water in the flutes, and not a reason to skip the WRB the drawings named.

The board going on is not automatically the start of the barrier. Integrated glass-mat WRB systems (coated faces plus a named joint treatment) are a different submittal. Untreated C1177 joints behind a wrap or fluid-applied membrane are the everyday condition. Qualify which product you hung.

Thickness, Type X, and the exterior listing

Common thicknesses in the class are 1/2 inch and 5/8 inch, 48-inch width, tapered or square edge per mill. 5/8 Type X glass-mat sheathing is the rated-exterior default when the UL / GA-600 exterior design names it. Interior 5/8 Type X wallboard is not a substitution on the skin.

Fire-rated exterior walls still read the listed design: sheathing type, fastener, orientation, ci, cladding. A C1177 label is not a 1-hour stamp.

Joints: stagger verticals, fit snug at openings, offset from opening edges per GA-253 (public language uses a 4-inch class of offset). Do not tape sheathing like a Level 4 corridor unless the WRB system named that joint treatment. Interior compound on an elevation is the wrong chemistry.

Edges, fasteners, and the stack

Score-and-snap still works; trim the cut so joints fit. Do not peel the mat. Store like gypsum: dry, flat, off the ground. A wet bunk of C1177 is still a wet gypsum core — the mat sheds rain on the elevation; it does not make a flooded pallet a sheathing product.

Fastener coating is part of the SKU. Interior drywall screws rust on an elevation and stain the cladding substrate. Length has to pass the panel and engage the backup the mill and C1280 table name. Spacing is typically tighter than an interior Level 4 hang — read GA-253 / C1280 and the fire design, not the corridor gun. Type S vs Type W is the interior class conversation; exterior CFS often wants a self-drilling, corrosion-resistant point.

Soffit panels in a mill’s sheathing family are a related SKU, not interior ceiling board hung outside. If the elevation turns a soffit, confirm the product is listed for that exposure.

Commercial vs residential

Commercial W&C. Glass-mat sheathing is a core envelope SKU on CFS backup. Price the panel, the corrosion-resistant fastener, the weather window you actually have, and whether WRB is in this number. It is not 5/8 Type X interior leftover.

Residential production. Wood-frame houses more often get wood structural panels plus wrap. Glass-mat gypsum sheathing shows up on mixed-use, some multi-family, and IRC / IBC details that name it. A production hang crew that has never set C1177 on CFS should not price it like 1/2-inch interior.

FAQ

Is DensGlass-class board a Level 4 interior?

No. It is a cladding substrate. Interior glass-mat is a different SKU.

Does the mill weather window replace the WRB?

No, unless that exact product is submitted as a listed WRB system with its joint treatment.

Can I hang it with interior Type S coils?

Not as the class default on exterior CFS. Corrosion-resistant, often self-drilling, length for the backup thickness. Mill and C1280 / GA-253.

Is 1/2-inch glass-mat sheathing Type X?

Only if that panel is classified Type X. Thickness is not the core.

Paper sheathing vs glass-mat — same hang?

Same application documents (C1280 / GA-253), different exposure clock, different facer. Do not prerock paper.
