Gypsum board handling on the jobsite
Gypsum board fails on the truck as often as it fails on the wall. A broken tapered edge, a wet bundle, or a sheet stood on end in the rain is not a finish-level problem you can knife out. ASTM C1396 describes the panel as manufactured. ASTM C840 / GA-216 expect dry framing and a weathertight building before interior board. Handling, stacking, and dust sit in mill installation notes, the SDS, and the shop’s OSHA program — not in a photocopied handbook table.
This page is for supers and crew leads. Commercial floors use hoists, carts, and elevator protection. Residential production unloads a truck into a house. Both still own broken corners and wet stock. This site is not your safety program.

Receive and store like it is finish material
Indoors, dry, flat. Interior paper-faced board is not a rainscreen. If the building is open, you are storing sheathing-class product or you are waiting. Wet C1396 wallboard is scrap — choosing drywall type. Glass-mat liner and exterior glass-mat have weather windows the mill listed; paper Type X does not inherit them.
Flat on sleepers or pallets, off bare earth and off wet slabs. Do not lean full bundles on edge for the week; edges crush and the board takes a curve that photographs after paint. Keep stacks stable and at a height the crew can work without climbing the pile. Manufacturer notes consistently want board protected from weather, condensation, and standing water — pull the current sheet, do not invent a stack height from last job.
FIFO by SKU. Type C, shaftliner, abuse, sag-resistant ceiling, and regular 1/2-inch look similar in a dark corridor. Mix them and the hang crew will hang the wrong core. Tag bundles to the takeoff line.
Condition the building, not just the pile. Hang on dry framing, in a closed-in space, with temperature in the range the compound mill will also accept. Wet lumber and unvented heat are winter problems that show up as finish defects months later. Handling wet board into a wet room is how you start that clock.
Move it without breaking the edge
A 4×8 or 4×12 of 5/8 Type X is a two-person sheet for most crews, or a cart / panel lift. Palming a ceiling sheet overhead without a lift is how you crack a taper before a fastener goes in. Carry on edge for the walk, set flat to stage, hang per how to hang drywall.
Forks and booms. Pick from the correct face of the bundle so you do not spear the core. Strapped units travel as units until you are at the floor. Do not break bands on the truck bed in the rain.
Vertical transport. Commercial: protect elevator cab interiors, use carts the GC allows, do not overload a hoist with a guess. Residential: stairs and door jambs eat corners; pad or accept waste. Long 12- and 16-foot stock needs a path before the truck shows up.
On the wall. Framing has to be in plane — steel stud. Forcing a belly into a rolled stud to “make it sit” is handling damage you then tape over.

Dust, silica, and cuts
Score-and-snap is still the default cut. Routers and sanding make dust. Gypsum and joint compound can contain crystalline silica; the SDS and OSHA silica rules are the documents, not a blog post. Cut with ventilation the shop actually uses. Do not treat a hallway as a sanding booth the night before a Level 5 walk.
Waste: broken board and compound buckets are jobsite waste streams the GC’s plan owns. Do not bury wet board in a wall because dumpster space is tight.
Commercial W&C vs residential production
Commercial wall-and-ceiling. Staging floors, hoist time, and elevator protection are bid or coordination items. Mixed SKUs (liner, Type C, glass-mat, ACT tile) need separated stacks. A warehouse-style dump of 5/8 in a corridor that still lacks windows is weather exposure. Carts and panel lifts are production tools, not luxuries, on long 12-foot stock.
Residential production. Truck-to-house is the handling system. Do not stage board on wet garage slabs or against green lumber. Ceiling board and wall 1/2-inch get confused on the same truck — tag them. Stilts and lifts are a shop safety decision; this page does not certify them.
What the super checks at delivery
- Mill, type, thickness, and quantity vs the takeoff (including listed-design names)
- Dry wrappers, intact corners, no crushed tapers
- Storage location closed-in and flat
- Path to the floor (hoist, stairs, door widths)
- SDS and mill handling notes on site with the submittal packet

FAQ
Can we hang board that got rained on if it dries out?
Interior paper-faced board that took a soaking is a replacement conversation with the mill and the spec, not a shop call. Face paper and core do not reset. Glass-mat products have their own wet-exposure notes — read those, not the paper-board habit.
Is leaning board on the long edge OK for a day?
A short stage on edge to carry is normal. A week on edge is crushed tapers and curved sheets. Store flat.
Who owns elevator damage?
Write it. Pad the cab or the GC’s elevator spec will punch your company. Handling is part of the drywall number on commercial floors.
