Resilient channel, hat channel, and isolation clips — hang details that fail when short-circuited

Resilient channel is a spring. Hat channel is a furr. Isolation clips are a rubber-and-steel mount that then take hat channel. Not one accessory with three names, and none of them work if a drywall screw finds the stud. Short-circuiting — a fastener or a finish that rigidly ties the gypsum back to the framing — is how a listed STC wall becomes a regular partition with extra steel in it.

This page is the hang a drywall sub actually builds. Public mill install notes (ClarkDietrich RC guidelines and peers), GA sound-control language, listed-assembly rule. Not an engineering stamp. Spacing, clip schedule, and layers come from the tested design, not a corridor habit.

Three members, three jobs

Resilient furring channel (RC). A light-gauge, typically 1/2-inch, single-leg spring channel. ASTM C645-class member sold by ClarkDietrich, MarinoWARE, and peers. The mounting flange screws to the framing; the free flange takes the gypsum. Installed perpendicular to studs or joists. The gypsum is supposed to float on that spring. Hat channel / furring channel. A hat-shaped furr used on masonry, in drywall-suspension ceilings, and as the channel that snaps into isolation clips. Stiffer than RC. Screwing hat flat to the stud as if it were RC is not a resilient hang.

Isolation clips. A clip fastens to the framing; 25-ga-class hat channel pressure-fits the clip; gypsum screws to the hat. The clip is the isolator. Clip schedule and load are the clip manufacturer’s table and the listed design — not last job’s RC layout.

Board on any of these hangs is still the named gypsum in the fire and sound tables. Products.

How the drywall sub hangs RC

Manufacturer wall notes (ClarkDietrich’s public RC guidelines are typical of the class) agree on the order:

  1. Framing in plane, height and mils already right. RC will not straighten a rolled 25-ga stud.
  2. Cavity insulation before the channel if the design has batts — friction-fit, not stuffed so tight the channel cannot move. See sound batts.
  3. RC perpendicular to framing. Slotted holes in the mounting flange over the stud or joist. Screw the mounting flange only — Type S pan-head class into light-gauge steel, Type W or Type S into wood, as the mill names. Nails are a bad idea on a spring.
  4. Splice by nesting ends over a framing member, or butt with the small gap the mill allows, still over framing. Do not lap RC in the bay and screw the lap through to a stud.
  5. Gypsum to the free flange with a screw long enough to engage the channel and short enough that the point cannot reach the stud or the track. That length changes with layer count. Double-layer acoustic walls are how crews grab a 1-5/8 screw and pin the whole spring to the steel.
  6. Ceiling RC follows the listed ceiling design; wall RC is a separate layout. Do not copy wall spacing onto a ceiling.

Orientation matters. Mill details show which leg sits against the framing. Install it backwards and you stiffen the member you paid to flex.

Finish the face to the GA-214 level on the schedule. Beads — Finishing — land on the gypsum, not on a screw through the bead into the stud.

How they fail when short-circuited

Drywall screws into the framing. The classic. Too-long screws, screws that miss the channel and hit the stud, screws at the floor or head that catch the track. One pin starts to spend the isolation; a row of them erases it. Mill notes exist specifically to stop this.

Base, cabinets, rails, TV mounts. A baseboard screw into the stud, a cabinet ledger lagged to the framing through the gypsum, a corridor rail into backing that was fastened rigid both sides — all of it bypasses the channel. Backing for those loads has to be detailed in the acoustic design (isolated backing, clip-compatible backing), not field-invented with a 2x flat.

Outlet boxes. A box tight to the stud with a ring bearing on the gypsum can couple the face. Cut clean, seal, and keep the box from clamping the board to the framing. Back-to-back boxes are a flanking hole even if the RC is perfect.

Both-face RC / “RC sandwich.” Some structural shear walls already have sheathing on both sides of the stud. Adding RC on both faces, or RC over sheathing in a way the listing did not test, is a different wall. Isolation clips exist in part for conditions RC cannot occupy. Do not stack RC on RC to “make it quieter.”

Hat channel substituted for RC. Hat screwed to the stud is furring. It is not the spring in a resilient-channel STC table. Clips plus hat are a different listed family. Substituting one for the other is a design change.

Insulation packed behind RC until the channel is dead. The batt should fill the stud cavity. It should not pin the free flange.

Fastener pattern copied from a direct-hang wall. C840 / GA-216 still apply, but the screw has to find channel, not stud. Layout the channel so board edges land on it. A board edge hanging in space, then screwed into a stud “to catch it,” is a short-circuit.

Fire listing ignored. Many STC walls are also hourly. RC or clips have to be the members in that UL / GA-600 design. Swapping clips for RC because the trailer had one is a listing problem.

Commercial vs residential

Commercial W&C. RC, hat, and clips show up on demising walls, plenums, and drywall ceilings over occupied space. Takeoff: members, clips, special screw lengths, slower hang, no-base-into-stud notes for other trades. The GC’s millwork and the electrician will short-circuit you if nobody told them.

Residential production / multi-family. Wood-frame party walls and floor-ceilings are where residential shops meet RC. Long screws, base into studs, and TV blocking are the failure list. Do not “just add RC” on single-layer 1/2-inch and call it a code acoustic design. Follow the listed assembly.

FAQ

Is hat channel the same as resilient channel?

No. Hat is a furr. RC is a spring. Isolation clips use hat as the channel, not as a substitute RC screwed to the stud.

What screw length do I use on RC?

Long enough to engage the free flange, short enough that the point cannot reach the framing. That length changes with gypsum thickness and layer count. Mill notes and the listed design — not a 1-5/8 habit.

Can I put RC on both sides of a stud wall?

Only if that exact condition is in the listed design. Many walls isolate one face. Double RC and RC over structural sheathing are easy ways to build an untested wall.

Does a short-circuit always show up on a punch list?

No. The wall looks like drywall. The occupant hears it after the paint is on.

Will more batts fix a short-circuited RC wall?

No. See sound batts. The rigid path around the cavity wins.

Are isolation clips a silent upgrade from RC?

Only when the listed design names them. Different hang, usually harder to short-circuit, not a field swap.
