Drywall inspection and punch
Punch is cheaper than callbacks if you inspect in the order the wall is built. Framing plane and gauge, then hang (fasteners, joints, gaps), then tape embed, then the GA-214 level the paint schedule bought, then a walk in the right light. Application language lives in ASTM C840 and GA-216. Board is ASTM C1396. Rated walls add the UL / GA-600 fastener and layer schedule, which can be tighter than the general table. Finish appearance is GA-214 — not “hospital smooth” unless someone mapped that phrase to a level.
This page is for PMs and supers. Commercial walks involve the GC, sometimes the architect, and occupancy. Residential production is a house punch and a callback window. Different lighting, different punch lists, same standards.

Hold points that actually save money
Framing, before board. Studs and joists in plane. Gauge and spacing match the limiting-height table and the documents — steel stud framing basics. Deflection track at the head where specified. Backing at cabinets, rails, and door stops. Do not let hangers “fix” a rolled 25-ga stud with extra screws.
Stock on the floor. Thickness, core, and facer match the takeoff and the listed design — choosing drywall type. Shaftliner in the shaft. Ceiling board or 5/8 on 24-inch ceilings. Wet-area backer in the wet zone. Wrong SKU is not a punch item after paint; it is a tear-off.
Hang, before tape. Sequence in how to hang drywall: ceilings first, joints staggered, floor gap, fasteners in framing. Check:
- Fastener class (Type S vs Type W) and spacing vs C840 / GA-216 and the fire design
- Heads dimpled, not punching face paper
- Edge distance so the core is not blown out
- No gypsum joint parked in a door or window corner (unless a control joint lives there)
- Control-joint locations from the drawings, or an RFI if silent — drywall control joints
A taper cannot mud out a missed stud or a belly. Send hang back.
Tape embed, before fill. Paper tape fully bedded, no bubbles, corners filled. Mesh, if used, with setting-type first coat as the mill requires — not all-purpose on a Level 4 corridor. Fire-taping on rated walls still has to close the joint the listing wants; Level 1 is not a skip.
Finish level, before paint. Punch to the specified GA-214 level, in lighting that will exist in service — or in raking light if the spec or mill notes call for it on Level 4/5. Tool marks acceptable at Level 3 are defects at Level 5. Texture is not a license to skip embed.
How to walk a room
Light. Overhead temp lights hide fastener photographs that a window or wall-washer will show. Commercial feature walls and residential great rooms with grazing light are Level 5 conversations if the spec is only “smooth.” Walk those first.
Distance and angle. GA-214 appearance is judged from a normal viewing distance, not a nose on the wall with a trouble light — unless the contract says otherwise. Write the viewing condition in the submittal so the punch is not a moving target.
Rated rooms. Spacing and layer count beat appearance. A beautiful Level 4 on a 1-hour corridor with 16-inch fastener spacing where the design wanted 12 is still a fail.
Wet rooms. Confirm backer vs gypsum by zone before tile or paint. Punching painted MR in a shower is the wrong inspection.
Accessories. Beads straight, crimps filled, control joints open and backed as specified. Caulk at dissimilar materials where the documents require it.
Commercial GC punch vs residential production
Commercial wall-and-ceiling. Expect a GC pre-punch, an architect/interior punch on feature spaces, and sometimes an owner walk. Corridor Level 4 in flat paint is not the boardroom in gloss. ACT vs gypsum lids are different trades on the same RFI log. Document hang inspection photos on rated walls before they disappear under tape — occupancy inspectors ask. Sequence other trades: if MEP cuts the lid after finish, that is a change ticket, not a drywall defect.
Residential production. Punch is faster and more texture-forgiving if the spec is orange-peel on Level 4. Custom smooth and low-angle light are not production texture. Nail pops after occupancy are often lumber shrinkage — see callbacks — but overdriven screws and missed framing are hang defects you should have caught before the painter.
Do not use a commercial raking-light Level 5 checklist on a sprayed production house, or a residential “it will texture out” habit on a commercial lobby.
What belongs on the written punch
Be specific: room, elevation, defect class, standard cited.
- Fastener pop / overdriven / missed framing
- Unembedded tape, ridge, or starved joint
- Finish level short of spec (name the level)
- Missing control joint / joint at opening corner
- Wrong board / damaged board / wet board
- Bead or trim alignment
- Incomplete fire-tape or unsealed penetration the drywall scope owns

FAQ
Who decides Level 4 vs “looks painted”?
The spec, citing GA-214. If the spec is silent, RFI before you finish. Do not let a punch walk invent a level.
Should we punch in raking light?
When the documents or the finish level imply critical lighting. Agree on the light source in writing. A trouble light at 1 inch is not a standard.
Is a hang inspection worth stopping the taper?
Yes. Embed over torn paper and missed studs is how you buy a callback after paint.
Does USG’s inspection chapter replace C840?
No. Use current C840 / GA-216 / GA-214 and current mill sheets. The handbook is manufacturer reference.
