Cement board screws for tile backer
Cement board is not gypsum. The fastener is not a drywall coil with a different label. ASTM C1325 (cementitious backer) and the backer mill name the screw: corrosion-resistant, the right point for wood or steel, a head that seats on a cement face. Hanging tile backer with Type W or Type S is how a shower fails before the tile setter shows up.

Why a drywall screw is the wrong default
Paper-faced gypsum fasteners are built to dimple face paper and to hold a gypsum core. Cement board has no paper to dimple. A bugle head can punch the cement face or sit without clamping. Interior drywall coating is not automatically the corrosion resistance a wet assembly wants. Coarse Type W into steel still strips; fine Type S into cement board on wood still may not be the mill’s named screw.
The backer mill’s fastener is typically:
- Corrosion-resistant for wet and damp locations the panel is sold into
- A wafer or ribbed wafer (or the mill’s named head) that seats on the cement face without spinning the panel
- Point and thread matched to wood or to steel — two SKUs on mixed jobs, same as gypsum
- Length through the panel plus the mill’s required penetration into the member
Glass-mat tile backer (ASTM C1178) and fiber-cement interior sheets (ASTM C1288) have their own mill fasteners. Do not assume the cement-board screw is the glass-mat screw. Do not hang DensShield-class backer with a gypsum Type S coil because “it is still gypsum core.” Read that mill.
Wood vs steel, point vs coating
Wood. Cement board over wood studs wants the mill’s wood-point, corrosion-resistant backer screw. Penetration is the backer sheet’s number, not a silent copy of the gypsum “5/8 inch into wood” note — confirm. Treated lumber and wet rooms are why the coating matters.
Steel. Light-gauge steel under a wet wall still needs a point that taps that flange. Some backer screws are self-piercing for drywall-stud thickness; heavier steel wants a drill point. The gypsum C1002 / C954 thickness gate (0.033 inch) is a useful warning, but the backer mill is the authority for that panel. See steel stud framing basics.
Interior phosphate drywall coating is the wrong assumption in a shower. Exterior and wet-area coatings the fastener house sells for cement board and sheathing are the family to pull from — still matching the mill PDF.
Spacing, gaps, and what is not mud
Spacing is the backer manufacturer’s table — often tighter than a single-layer gypsum wall. Ceilings are tighter than walls on many sheets. Do not hang cement board on C840’s 16-inch wall pattern because that is how the drywall crew thinks.
Leave the gap at the tub or shower lip the mill draws. Fasteners stay the mill’s edge distance off the panel edge so you do not blow a cement corner. Joints get alkali-resistant mesh and the setting mortar the mill and TCNA name — not paper tape and all-purpose compound as the tile bond line. Cement board is not a paint-grade Level 4 wall. A listed fire design that includes a cementitious backer will name the fastener if it cares. Do not swap a gypsum Type X hang screw into that layer because the corridor on the other side is Type S.
Commercial vs residential
Residential production. Cement-board screws appear where tile actually goes — shower walls, tub surrounds, some floors the tile spec named. They do not belong on every bathroom wall “because moisture.” Painted bath walls are gypsum (regular or MR) with Type W. Mixing one coil through a production house bath is how you either rust a shower or waste backer screws on paint walls.
Commercial wall and ceiling. Gang showers, accessible wet rooms, kitchens, and healthcare soiled-utility: the finish schedule names the backer. Fastener class follows that mill. Steel stud is the usual commercial backup — buy the steel-point backer screw, not leftover Type S. Lath and plaster in the same building are still Type A, a different pouch.
What to put on the takeoff
Separate from gypsum hang:
- Backer type (C1325 cement, C1178 glass-mat tile backer, C1288 fiber-cement) and mill
- Fastener: corrosion-resistant backer class, head, wood vs steel point, length
- Spacing from that mill’s current sheet
- Mesh and setting material for joints (not finishing compound)

FAQ
Can I use Type W or Type S on cement board?
Not as the mill’s named fastener. Wrong head, often wrong coating, and the backer sheet is the spec. Buy the backer screw.
Wood and steel on the same restroom floor?
Two points. Same as gypsum. Label the pouches.
Is a wafer-head drywall screw close enough?
Wafer is the right idea for bearing. Cement-board screws still need the coating and the mill listing. Do not substitute on a wet wall because the head looks similar.
Does C840 spacing apply?
C840 is gypsum. Use the backer mill’s table.
