Drywall finishing boxes for production tapers
Finishing boxes — flat boxes, 7-inch and 10-inch in the trailer — are the ATF tool that wipes the fill and the finish coats on flats after the automatic taper has laid the paper. They are not a mud pan with a lid. This page is for production tapers and the owners who buy the kit, not for a punch crew that lives on a 6-inch knife.
Brand names below are class language (TapeTech-class, Columbia-class, LEVEL5-class). We do not invent model numbers, prices, ASINs, or retailer URLs. Retailer programs are not live. Buy boxes, handles, blades, and wheels from a finishing-tool dealer and the current catalog. When hops exist, the affiliate disclosure applies.

What a box is for
The box meters compound onto the joint and the blade wipes it in one pass. A 7-inch class box is the workhorse fill. A 10-inch class box is the wider finish pass. Some shops run a third width for a specific coat; that is a catalog decision, not a SKU we will invent. Handles, extendable or not, are how the taper works a wall from the floor and a ceiling from a rolling bench or stilts where the site allows.
What matters in the trailer
- Blade and crown. A worn blade or a box that is not set will leave tracks that a knife has to chase. That is donated time.
- Wheels and pressure plate. Production boxes are serviceable. Gaskets, wheels, and blades are wear. A dealer who stocks them is the relationship.
- Compound. The box has to move the mud you mixed. Lightweight all-purpose, setting compounds, and some specialty fills behave differently. Follow the compound manufacturer and the tool manufacturer. Job-qty mud comes from the gypsum house.
- Handle length vs the room. House 8-foot walls and a 10-foot commercial corridor are not the same stick. The box is not the reach tool — the handle and the bench or stilts are.
A box does not make a Level 5. GA-214 still decides how many coats and how much skim. A 10-inch box on a belly still photographs in critical light.
Boxes vs knife-and-pan vs banjo
Knife-and-pan is still how a lot of residential production and almost all punch is done — 6-inch, 10-inch, 12-inch knives, hawk or pan. See knives, hawks, and pans.
Banjo lays tape and a bed. It does not replace the box on a production fill-and-finish. See banjo tapers.
Boxes are the production wipe on flats once ATF is the shop’s method. They assume the hang is in plane and the paper is in. They do not tape. They do not do inside corners — that is the corner applicator.
Do not send a taper into a Level 5 office with a pan and a 12-inch knife because the boxes are on the other job. Bid the kit or subcontract.

A residential shop that buys one 10-inch box and no 7-inch, no pump, and no parts will not have a production system. The box is a line in the ATF kit, not a standalone miracle.
How shops actually buy
Finishing-tool dealer. Boxes, handles, blades, wheels, gaskets. TapeTech-class, Columbia-class, LEVEL5-class. Some DTC. The current catalog is the parts list.
Gypsum house. Compound in job quantity. Some houses stock ATF wear parts.
Box store. Not the production-box source. A 12-inch knife for punch, yes.

FAQ
7-inch or 10-inch?
Both, on a production cart. The 7-inch class is the fill; the 10-inch class is the wider finish. Confirm current widths in the catalog. This page will not invent a third SKU.
Can a knife replace a box on commercial flats?
On punch and on a weird bulkhead, yes. On corridor footage, that is a rate decision you will lose. ATF exists because of that footage.
Do boxes work with setting compound?
Follow the tool and compound manufacturers. Some setting mixes are a knife job. Do not assume every box likes every bag.
