Field note
Hopper texture guns for residential production
A hopper and a knockdown / orange-peel gun are everyday tools on residential production. Commercial work more often wants a specified smooth Level 4 or 5 or a specified spray. Do not assume a residential hopper belongs on a Level 4 office. This page is for texture crews and production shops, not for a homeowner spraying one closet.
Brand names below are class language for hopper guns and the compressors that feed them. We do not invent model numbers, prices, ASINs, or retailer URLs. Retailer programs are not live. When they are, the affiliate disclosure applies. The texture the house spec actually named is the texture you spray — not the pattern that was in the trailer last week.
Primer before texture is GA-214 language, usually paint’s scope unless the drywall number says otherwise. Compound sits under Finishing. Reach is often stilts. Cluster: production tools. Directory: Tools.
What the hopper is for
The hopper holds mixed texture. Air from a compressor atomizes it through a nozzle onto walls and ceilings. Orifice, air pressure, mix, and the knock-down knife (if the spec is knockdown) decide the pattern. Orange peel, knockdown, and similar residential patterns are the everyday language. Skip trowel and hand texture are different tools.
What matters in the trailer
- Nozzle and orifice. Pattern changes with the orifice and the mix. Confirm the current tips in the manufacturer’s sheet. This page will not invent a tip SKU.
- Compressor. A compressor that will not hold pressure through a ceiling pass is donated time and a mottled room. Match CFM to the gun from the current catalog, not from memory.
- Mix. Texture compound is not leftover joint mud unless the manufacturer says it is. Mix with a mud mixer the way the bag tells you. Job-qty from the gypsum house.
- Reach. Stilts on a lot of house work. Benches and lifts where the site or the height says so. The hopper is not a lift.
Hearing protection on hoppers is real. Eye protection is real. This site is not your PPE program; the shop owns it.
Texture is not a finish level
GA-214 still applies under the texture. A hopper does not turn a bad hang into a Level 4. It can hide a coat a smooth office would photograph. That is why residential production and commercial interiors are different bids.
Specified commercial spray is often a different rig and a different spec — not the house hopper. If the drawings name a smooth level, leave the hopper on the house truck.
Residential production vs commercial interiors
| Decision | Residential production | Commercial wall and ceiling |
|---|---|---|
| Hopper | Everyday | Not the default |
| Pattern | Orange peel, knockdown, and the house spec | Specified spray or smooth Level 4 / 5 |
| Reach | Stilts common | Benches, lifts; stilts only if the site allows |
| Primer | GA-214 language; usually paint unless the drywall number says otherwise | Same rule; more often a smooth paint spec |
| Punch | Hopper for a room; knife for a patch | Match the existing specified finish — do not orange-peel an office |
A residential crew that picks up a school TI should read the finish schedule before the hopper is on the floor. A commercial W&C shop that takes a tract of houses should price the hopper, the compressor, and the stilts — that is the house finish.
How shops actually buy
Pro tool dealer / box store. Hopper guns, extra nozzles, knockdown knives, small compressors. This is a cart a texture crew actually clicks.
Gypsum house. Texture compound in job quantity. Not the gun as the plan.
Finishing-tool dealer. Some stock hoppers next to ATF. Useful if that counter is already the stop.

FAQ
Can we hopper a Level 4 office?
Not if the spec is smooth Level 4 or 5. Hopper is the house tool. Read the finish schedule.
Is leftover joint mud OK in the hopper?
Only if the texture manufacturer says so. Most production texture is a texture product. Mix it like the bag.
Stilts or a bench for texture?
Residential production often stilts. Commercial interiors more often benches and lifts. Site rules decide. See stilts.
Are retailer links affiliate links?
Not yet. Programs are not live. See the affiliate disclosure.
