Screw-gun bits and nosepieces
The bit and the nosepiece are how a drywall screw gun dimples instead of punches. A worn Phillips bit cam-outs and strips. A chewed nosepiece overdrives and tears face paper. Torn paper is a fastener that will photograph — that is a finish-level problem you bought at the hang. This page is for hang crews who already own the gun.
Brand names below are class language for drywall bits, nosepieces, and collated noses. We do not invent part numbers, prices, ASINs, or retailer URLs. Retailer programs are not live. What the nosepiece is for
A depth-sensitive nosepiece stops the screw when the head is just below the face paper. Too proud and the taper is coating a bump. Too deep and the paper is cut and the fastener has no face to hold. Adjustment is a collar on the nose, not a clutch guess on a drill.
Bits. Phillips drywall bits are wear. Production hangers go through them. A round, chewed bit is how you cam-out Type S in 25-ga. Confirm the current bit in the catalog. This page will not invent a bit SKU. Keep a pouch of them the way you keep knife blades.
Loose-screw nose. Standard hang and punch. The screw is magnetized or held in the bit.
Collated nose / magazine. Strip feed. Still has to dimple. Mixing brands without the dealer’s current cross is how the strip jams. See collated screw systems.
Metal-to-metal bits. Stud-to-track is a different bit and a different fastener. Do not hang board with a framing bit because it was in the impact. Do not frame with a drywall nose.
Type W vs Type S does not live in the bit
The bit drives both. The coil or the box has to match the framing. Residential wood gets Type W. Light-gauge steel gets Type S fine-thread. Heavier steel gets the self-drilling point the mill and the fastener house name. Official data should match ASTM C1002 (or C954 for thicker steel). A wood-screw coil into 25-ga is how you fail a hang before the taper starts.
Depth still matters on both. Overdrive on steel strips. Overdrive on wood tears paper. Underdrive on either photographs.

A residential gun can hang commercial Type X on steel. The fastener cannot be Type W. The nosepiece still has to dimple 5/8 the same way it dimpled 1/2.
How shops actually buy
Pro tool dealer / box store. Bits in packs, replacement nosepieces, collated magazines. This is the cart a hanger clicks tonight when the nose is chewed.
Fastener house / gypsum house. The screws — Grabber and peers — in job quantity. Some houses stock collated noses.

FAQ
How often do we replace bits?
When they cam-out. Production hang is a pouch of bits, not one bit for the month. Confirm current packs in the catalog.
Can one nosepiece run collated and loose?
Only if the manufacturer says so. Many shops run two noses. Do not invent a cross.
Why are we tearing paper with a new gun?
Depth setting, a chewed nose, or the wrong rpm. The gun is not the only variable. See screw guns.
