Self-drilling screws for heavier steel
When the steel gets thick enough, a piercing point spins. That is not a bad gun. That is ASTM C954. Self-drilling points — Type S-12 in the trailer — drill then tap. Interior 25-ga drywall stud is still Type S. Structural 33-mil and a lot of exterior CFS are not.

The thickness gate
ASTM C1002 covers self-piercing screws into cold-formed steel thinner than 0.033 inch (0.84 mm) — and into wood, and gypsum to gypsum. ASTM C954 covers steel drill screws for gypsum panel products or metal plaster bases into steel from 0.033 inch to 0.112 inch (0.84 mm to 2.84 mm).

EQ drywall stud is still a drywall member when the mill rates it that way — piercing Type S if the mils stay under the gate. Do not guess from the color sticker. See exterior CFS vs interior light-gauge.
If the screw spins on the flange, you likely brought a C1002 point to C954 steel. Change the point. Do not keep burning bits.
Board-to-steel (the hang)
C954 screws for gypsum into heavier steel still want a bugle head on interior board so the head dimples face paper. Fine thread, drill point. Length still has to engage the flange through one or more layers. Multi-layer steel walls the trailer sees (always confirm the design): base layer often 1-inch S-12 class; face layer often 1-5/8 inch. The listed UL / GA-600 design can name something else. The listing wins.
Spacing is still C840 / GA-216 and the fire design — C954 changes the point, not the hang pattern. Edge distance at least 3/8 inch. Dimple, do not punch. Depth-sensitive guns still matter; a drill point does not give you license to bury the head. Hang notes: how to hang drywall.
Shaftwall face layers follow the member. If the shaft stud is still in the piercing range, Type S. If it is not, S-12. Liner details are their own pattern — shaftwall.
Metal-to-metal (the frame)
Light-gauge metal-to-metal — stud to track, clip to stud, channel to framing — is a different family. Thin steel often takes a sharp / piercing framing screw (pan, modified truss, hex). Heavier steel takes a drill-point framing screw. These frame the wall. They do not hang the board.
Do not hang gypsum with a pan-head framing screw and expect a Level 4. Do not stitch track with a bugle-head drywall coil and call it framed. Head types: drywall screw head types.
Framing-screw length, coating (interior vs exterior), and whether the manufacturer allows a crimp instead of a screw at a given joint are steel-mill notes. ClarkDietrich and every steel house publish them. Grabber and peers sell the screws. Use the current sheet.

Commercial vs residential
Commercial wall and ceiling. This is where S-12 and drill-point framing screws earn the pouch. Interior drywall stud stays Type S. Doors, tall walls, abuse partitions, and anything the spec moved to structural 20-ga or 18-ga move the hang to C954. Exterior CFS on the same job is usually C954 and a different bid. Mixed-gauge floors need both coils on the cart, labeled.
Residential production. Most houses never see C954. Type W into wood is the hang. Self-drill shows up on steel furr, some townhome demising, light-commercial addenda, and the occasional structural header wrap. Do not order a drill-point collated coil for a wood tract because a TI last month needed it.
What to put on the takeoff
Separate lines:
- Type S / C1002 for light-gauge hang
- S-12 / C954 for board into heavier steel, with length
- Light-gauge metal-to-metal framing screws
- Heavy-gauge drill-point metal-to-metal screws
- Exterior coating when the member is exterior or wet

When do I need S-12 / C954?
When the steel is 0.033 inch and thicker. Self-drilling point, not a C1002 piercing point.
Is a framing screw a drywall screw with a drill point?
No. Metal-to-metal framing screws stitch steel. C954 hang screws put gypsum on steel. Different heads, different takeoff lines.
Can I use C954 into 25-ga?
A drill point will usually go through light-gauge. It is the wrong default. Type S is the C1002 class for that steel. Extra drill length can strip a thin flange.
Does a drill point change spacing?
No. Spacing is still the hang document and the fire design.
