Type W drywall screws for wood framing

Type W is the residential hang screw. Coarse thread, piercing point, usually a bugle head, made to bite wood. Fine thread into a 2×4 still holds; coarse thread into 25-ga steel walks or strips. That is how a hang fails before the taper opens a box.

What Type W is

C1002 Type W is a coarse-thread, self-piercing tapping screw for gypsum panel products into wood members. Coarse thread so there is enough bite in dimensional lumber, trusses, I-joist flanges the mill allows, and wood furring. Bugle head dimples the face paper. Corrosion-resistant coating that does not kill compound adhesion is in the spec — do not hang with a rusty deck screw and hope the mud sticks.

What it fastens. Gypsum to wood studs, plates, joists, trusses, and wood furring on residential production and on the wood-frame rooms of a mixed-use job. Garage separation, basement ceilings on wood joists, and the wood blocking a commercial floor still has.

What it is not. Not the recommended hang into light-gauge drywall stud — that is Type S. Not a laminating screw — that is Type G. Not a cement-board fastener. Not a framing nailer coil. Comparison page: Type S vs Type W vs laminating.

Gypsum Association public notes allow Type S into wood. They do not recommend Type W into steel. Fine thread finds enough steel in a thin flange; coarse thread does not. A production house that “always runs coarse” will strip a metal-stud TI if nobody changed the coil.

Length and penetration

Length has to put the required thread into the wood. Manufacturer and gypsum application notes commonly cite at least 5/8 inch penetration into wood for drywall screws. That is a minimum, not a takeoff length. 1/2-inch board plus 5/8 inch of wood is a different screw than 5/8-inch Type X plus 5/8 inch of wood. Double-layer wood walls add the base-layer thickness.

The listed fire design may want a named length — for example a 1-inch minimum in a given UL wall — that beats the general table. Do not invent a length from another job. Do not assume the collated coil on the truck is the length the garage-separation listing named.

Edge distance still at least 3/8 inch from paper edges and ends — same hang rule as steel. Wide headers and flat joists: manufacturer notes have said for years not to anchor gypsum hard across the flat grain of wide dimensional lumber; float it or put a joint there. Collation is how production houses hang

Collated Type W is the everyday residential coil: 4×12 and 4×16 stock, repeated bays, ceilings first. Collation does not change ASTM class, penetration, or spacing. It does not excuse missing a stud. Loose Type W still belongs on punch, at openings, and on bulkheads the magazine will not reach. See collated drywall fasteners.

Nails still exist in C840 / GA-216 tables. If a spec names nails, read it; do not silently swap a coil.

Spacing and the fire design

Single-layer, screws, no adhesive (confirm C840 / GA-216 and the fire design):

Fire-rated designs often want 12 inches on walls even at 16-inch studs. A residential 16-inch wall pattern does not travel onto a 1-hour garage separation or a townhome demising wall because “that is how we hang houses.” Pull the listing.

Adhesive-plus-fastener schedules and multi-layer wood walls have different tables. Base-layer spacing often opens up when the face layer is fastened through to framing. Laminated faces that are not driven to the stud follow the laminating schedule, not the single-layer wall table.

Commercial vs residential

Residential production. Type W is the default. Collated. Depth-sensitive gun. 1/2-inch interiors and sag-resistant ceilings. Type S only if that wall is actually steel. Laminating screws are occasional — overlays, curves, some double-layer separations — not the everyday coil.

Commercial wall and ceiling. Type W is the wood pouch: blocking, nailers, window bucks, the wood-frame rooms on a mixed-use floor, a roof truss ceiling the drywall sub still hangs. The hang default on interior stud is Type S. Do not let the wood coil migrate onto 25-ga because the magazine fit.

A commercial shop hanging houses still wants Type W into wood. A residential crew on a school TI needs Type S, not the house coil.

What to put on the takeoff

Name Type W, C1002, length, and collation if it is in the production plan. Name Type S (and S-12) as separate lines when steel is on the same job. Do not write “drywall screws — 1 box.”

FAQ

Can I use Type W into steel?

Not as the recommended hang into light-gauge drywall stud. Fine thread (Type S) is the C1002 class for that steel. Coarse thread strips or never really bites 18-mil flange.

Can Type S replace Type W on a house?

The Association allows Type S into wood. Production still stocks Type W. Penetration, length, and the fire design still have to be right.

How long a screw?

Through the board and at least the published wood penetration — commonly 5/8 inch into wood — or the longer length the listed design named.

Do collated Type W screws change spacing?

No. Spacing is C840 / GA-216 and the fire design.
