Automatic taping tools for production tapers
Automatic taping tools — ATF in the trailer — are how a production taper puts paper and a bed of compound on footage that would bury a knife-and-pan crew. The automatic taper (bazooka-class), the pump, the gooseneck, the boxes, and the corner applicators are one kit. This page is for crew leads and owners who already know GA-214 levels, not for a first-time homeowner buying a “drywall kit.”
Brand names below are class language (TapeTech-class, Columbia-class, LEVEL5-class) so a PM knows what the trailer means. We do not invent model numbers, prices, ASINs, or retailer URLs. Retailer programs are not live. TapeTech-class tools are bought from a finishing-tool dealer; the manufacturer’s current catalog is the parts list. What ATF actually changes
ATF changes hours. It does not change Level 4 into Level 5. It does not hide a wavy hang, a missed stud, or a run of torn paper. A bazooka on a bad hang still photographs in critical light. Price the finish for the substrate you actually hung — see how to hang drywall and finishing levels.
The automatic taper lays paper tape and a controlled bed in one pass on flats. Boxes wipe the fill and the finish coats. A pump keeps the tools charged. A gooseneck feeds the taper. Corner applicators and angle heads do the inside corners. A banjo is a different, simpler tape-and-mud tool some shops still run on punch and on houses that do not justify a full ATF cart.
Paper is the default on stressed joints and on most wet-compound systems unless the spec or the board manufacturer says otherwise. Mesh tape is the wrong answer on a lot of production joints. ATF is a paper-tape system. Do not mix that language with a mesh-and-setting-compound patch cart.
The kit, not a single tool
A shop that “buys a bazooka” and skips the pump, boxes, and parts will idle the taper. Production ATF is:
- Automatic taper (bazooka-class)
- Pump and gooseneck
- 7-inch and 10-inch finishing boxes, handles
- Corner applicators / angle heads
- Replacement blades, gaskets, wheels, and the small parts the dealer stocks
- Compound the pump will actually move — job-qty from the gypsum house, not a night-run bucket as the plan

Plenty of house work is still knife-and-pan. That is not a failure. It is a rate decision. A residential crew that picks up a school TI should not assume the knives will hold the footage. Bid ATF time or subcontract the tape.
How shops actually buy
Finishing-tool dealer. Automatic tapers, boxes, pumps, replacement blades and gaskets. TapeTech-class, Columbia-class, and LEVEL5-class tools sell through dealers (and some DTC). Until a manufacturer program is live on this site, treat those as editorial names and dealer purchases.
Gypsum house. Job-qty compound and paper tape. Some houses stock ATF parts. No publisher affiliate on those pallets.

FAQ
Do I need a bazooka for residential production?
Only if the footage and the shop’s tape rate justify ATF. Plenty of house work is still knife-and-pan. ATF does not replace a Level 5 skim.
Will ATF fix a wavy hang?
