Drywall dust extraction for hang and finish
Silica and gypsum dust are a shop program and a site rule, not a product review. This page will not write that program, invent an OSHA citation, or sell a “best mask.” It will name the extraction gear a drywall sub actually puts on the truck — vacs, hoses, filters, and the vacuum-assist sanders they attach to — so a PM knows what the trailer means.
Brand names below are class language for the vacs and sanders pro dealers stock (Festool-class, Mirka-class, and the shop vacs that are not those). We do not invent model numbers, prices, ASINs, or retailer URLs. Retailer programs are not live. When they are, the affiliate disclosure applies. Half-mask or a well-fit respirator, eye protection, and the rest of PPE still belong to the shop even when the vac is running.

What extraction is actually for
The point is to pull gypsum dust at the tool instead of letting it fill the floor. Occupied TIs, specified smooth Level 4 / 5 offices, hospitals, and any GC who will not accept a dust cloud are why commercial finish crews buy the kit. Residential texture work still throws dust from a pole sander and a hopper; the house spec often accepts that. The occupied remodel does not.
The system, not a vac
- Tool. Vacuum-assist sander, some cutout routers, some mixers. A pole sander has no hose.
- Hose and cuff. The diameter and the cuff have to match the tool. A mismatch is a clogged pad.
- Vac. Rated for the dust you are making. A wet/dry vac that collapses the filter in ten minutes is not the commercial kit.
- Filter and bags. Wear. A dealer who stocks them is the relationship. This page will not invent a filter SKU.
- PPE. Extraction is not a license to skip a respirator the shop already required.
Do not treat a household vac as a gypsum plan. Do not treat this paragraph as a citation.
Where the dust actually comes from
Sanding. Joints and field on smooth finishes. The big volume. See vacuum-assist drywall sanders.
Mixing. Opening bags and spinning a paddle. See mud mixers. Some shops mix outdoors or in a contained room.
Cutout. Router bits on device lots. See cutout routers.
Hang. Cutting board is a different dust (bigger chips, less cloud) but still gypsum. Score-snap with a knife throws less than a saw on gypsum.
Texture hoppers throw mist, not the same as sanding dust. Hearing and eye protection still apply — see hopper texture guns.
Residential production vs commercial interiors

A residential crew that picks up an occupied TI should bid extraction, not assume the pole sander is allowed. A commercial shop that takes a tract of houses should not run the Planex-class kit as the texture plan.
How shops actually buy
Pro tool dealer. Matching sander-plus-vac kits, hoses, filters. Acme-class desks often fill this better than the box.
Box store. Shop vacs, pole sanders, some compact electrics. Confirm the vac is actually for the sander you own.
Gypsum house. Compound. Not the vac.

FAQ
Does a vacuum sander replace a respirator?
The shop’s program decides. Extraction reduces the cloud. It is not a magic exemption. This page will not write the program.
Can any shop vac run a Planex-class head?
Follow the tool manufacturer. A mismatched vac is a clog and a filter fire drill. See vacuum sanders.
Is gypsum dust the same as silica?
Gypsum joint finishing and mixing have their own controls. Some jobs also have silica from other trades. The shop owns the program. We will not invent a citation.
