Field note
Line lasers for drywall layout
A line or combination laser is the layout tool a hang crew and a metal-stud foreman actually carry for tracks, openings, and bulkheads. It does not replace squaring to the building grid. It does not replace a rotary laser on a large interior, a drywall-suspension ceiling, or an ACT layout. This page is for crew leads, not for a homeowner hanging one accent wall.
Brand names below are class language for the line lasers pro tool dealers actually stock. We do not invent model numbers, prices, ASINs, or retailer URLs. Retailer programs are not live. When they are, the affiliate disclosure applies. Buy from the current catalog; confirm range, indoor visibility, and mount in that catalog.
Commercial walls and ceilings are a layout trade before they are a hang trade. See steel stud framing basics. Hang sequence: how to hang drywall. Cluster: production tools. Directory: Tools, steel stud / framing.
What a line laser is for
A line laser throws a level and/or plumb line (often a cross) onto the floor, wall, or ceiling so track, backing, openings, and bulkheads land on the same plane. A combination unit that also dots or adds a third plane is what a lot of commercial interiors carry. Residential production can live on a good line laser and a chalk line.
What matters in the trailer
- Indoor visibility vs the bay. A garage and a sunlit slab are different. Green vs red is a preference and a catalog spec, not a SKU we will invent. Confirm the current rating for the rooms you actually work.
- Mount. Track clamp, magnetic mount, tripod — the unit has to sit on steel stud, on a column, or on a tripod without walking. A laser that only sits on a windowsill is a homeowner tool.
- Range. House work is short. A commercial corridor and a gym are not. When the line dies before the far track, you need a rotary or a different unit.
- The building grid. The laser does not square a rolled slab or a building that is out. Square to the drawings and the control the GC gave you. Then throw the line.
Mark layout before the first board: studs and joists on 16 or 24, backing at cabinets and rails, control-joint locations from the drawings. The laser is how you see it. It is not the drawing.
Line vs rotary
Line / combination. Tracks, door and window openings, bulkheads, wall layout, residential production. Everyday pouch tool.
Rotary. Large interiors, drywall-suspension, ACT grid. A commercial W&C shop that also sells grid will own a rotary. See rotary lasers and ACT and ACT.
Do not mix ACT hanger-wire language with gypsum control joints. Do not use a line laser as the only layout on a gym ACT ceiling because it was in the van.
Residential production vs commercial interiors
| Decision | Residential production | Commercial wall and ceiling |
|---|---|---|
| Default layout | Line laser and chalk | Line and rotary |
| Tracks | Occasional steel, mostly wood plates | Everyday metal stud and track |
| Openings | Doors and windows on wood | Hollow metal, borrowed lites, rated openings |
| Ceilings | Joists; chalk and a line | Drywall-suspension and ACT — rotary territory |
| Punch | One combo laser on the punch cart | Same, plus the rotary stays with the layout lead |
A residential production crew that picks up a school TI should not assume the house laser will lay out a gym. Bid the rotary time or subcontract the grid. A commercial shop that takes a tract of houses still wants a line laser in every hang bag.
How shops actually buy
Pro tool dealer / box store. Line and combination lasers, tripods, extra batteries, glasses. Acme-class and box-store pro desks are where a hanger actually clicks.
Gypsum house. Not the laser source.
Retailer programs are not live. We will not invent an ASIN, a price, or an associate tag. See the affiliate disclosure.
The metal-stud kit around the laser — aviation snips, chop saw, screw gun with metal-to-metal bits — is steel stud framing, not this page.
FAQ
Is a line laser enough for ACT?
Not as the only tool on a large interior. ACT and drywall-suspension want a rotary. A line laser still lays out walls and bulkheads on the same job.
Does the laser replace a square and a chalk line?
No. It speeds the line. Square to the building grid first.
Green or red?
Catalog spec and the rooms you work. This page will not invent a model. Confirm indoor visibility in the current sheet.
Are retailer links affiliate links?
Not yet. Programs are not live. See the affiliate disclosure.
