Rotary lasers for ACT and drywall-suspension
A rotary laser is the layout tool a commercial wall-and-ceiling shop owns for large interiors, drywall-suspension, and ACT grid. Residential production can live on a line laser and a chalk line. A shop that also sells grid will own a rotary. This page is for layout leads and estimators, not for a homeowner hanging one room.
Brand names below are class language for the rotary lasers pro tool dealers actually stock. We do not invent model numbers, prices, ASINs, or retailer URLs. Retailer programs are not live. ACT is its own package — see ACT. Drywall-suspension is gypsum on tees, not tile. Do not mix ACT hanger-wire language with gypsum control joints. Cluster: production tools. Walls still start with steel stud framing basics.
What the rotary is for
A rotary throws a 360-degree level plane (and, on some units, a vertical plane) so hanger wire, drywall tees, ACT grid, and a large slab of track sit on the same elevation. A receiver is how you read it in a bright gym. A line laser dies before the far wall; that is why this tool exists.
What matters in the trailer
- Range vs the bay. A corridor and a gymnasium are different. Confirm the current range with and without a receiver. This page will not invent a spec.
- Accuracy. Layout is a commercial W&C deliverable. A rotary that walks or a tripod that is not stable is donated grid time.
- Receiver and mount. Indoor visibility is not enough on a sunlit slab or a high deck. The receiver and the tripod or column clamp are part of the kit.
- The building grid. The laser does not square a building that is out. Square to the control the GC gave you. Then set elevation.
On drywall-suspension the board still has to be oriented to the tees the catalog and the drawings require. The rotary sets the plane. It does not change hang sequence or fastener class.
ACT vs gypsum ceiling vs drywall-suspension
ACT. Grid and lay-in tile. Hanger wire, wall angle, main tees, cross tees, movement joints that are not gypsum control joints. Different tools, different laser setup. Directory: ACT.
Gypsum ceiling. Hang, tape, a GA-214 level. Joists or drywall tees.
Drywall-suspension. Steel tees that take board, not tile. Independently supported. The rotary is how a large plane stays a plane. The panel lift still sets the sheet.
If the shop owns acoustical ceilings, the grid tools are not the drywall-stud kit. Do not send the metal-stud foreman’s line laser as the only layout on a gym ACT ceiling.

A residential production crew that picks up a school TI should bid rotary time or subcontract the ceiling. A commercial W&C shop that takes a tract of houses should not treat the rotary as the hang-bag tool — a line laser is the house tool.
How shops actually buy
Pro tool dealer. Rotary lasers, receivers, tripods, extra batteries. Acme-class desks fill this better than a box-store wall. Confirm the current kit, not a model we invent.
Box store. Line lasers, yes. A production rotary, sometimes. Do not assume the house unit is the gym unit.
Gypsum house / ACT dealer. Grid and tile. Not the laser.

FAQ
Can a line laser replace a rotary on ACT?
Not on a large interior. A line laser still lays out walls and bulkheads on the same job. Grid elevation wants a rotary.
Does the rotary replace squaring the building?
No. Square to the control first. Then set the plane.
Do we need a rotary if we do not sell ACT?
If you hang drywall-suspension or large gypsum ceilings, yes. If you only hang houses, a line laser is the everyday tool.
