Aviation snips for metal-stud framing
Aviation snips are the cut tool a metal-stud foreman actually has on the belt for track notches, stud copes, and the cut that is not worth walking to the chop saw. They are not a substitute for a chop or band saw on long runs. They are not how you cut structural exterior CFS as a production method. This page is for commercial wall-and-ceiling framing and the residential crew that hits a demising wall or a basement furr.

Left, right, and straight
Aviation snips are color-coded in the field: left-cutting, right-cutting, and straight. A metal-stud kit carries all three. Using the wrong offset is how you fight the cut and twist the flange. What matters in the trailer
- Gauge. Interior drywall stud is light-gauge. Snips that will not get through the track you actually buy are the wrong snips. Heavier structural CFS is a saw problem more often than a snips problem — see steel stud framing basics.
- Spring and lock. Production snips live in a pouch. A lock that opens in the pouch and a spring that dies are donated time. Replace them. Do not weld a spring.
- Cut quality. A clean cut on track for a door opening is a hollow-metal coordination problem. A jagged track is a door that will not sit.
- The rest of the kit. Chop or band saw with the right blade, screw gun with metal-to-metal bits, crimper where the manufacturer allows crimps, laser, and a current limiting-height table — not a memorized “25-ga to 10 feet” rule.
Snips do not set height. Limiting height is a mill table and the drawings. EQ drywall stud is not a silent upgrade to structural 20-ga.
What snips are not
They are not aviation shears for duct as a drywall production plan. They are not tin snips you bought for flashing. They are not how you cut shaftliner or gypsum. Score-snap gypsum with a knife and T-square — see T-squares and rasps.
They are not a license to field-notch a stud in a way the mill and the fire design do not allow. Knockouts exist. Random holes in a web are a structural and a UL problem on the wrong wall.

A residential crew that picks up a school TI needs the snips and the saw, the Type S screws, and the laser. A commercial shop that takes a tract of houses will still want snips in the bag for the occasional steel.

Pro tool dealer / box store. Left, right, and straight aviation snips, replacements. This is a pouch purchase.
Gypsum house / steel house. The stud and track. Not the snips as the plan. Do not order 20-ga by the stick from a retail cart because the snips were there.

FAQ
Do we need all three snips?
Yes on a metal-stud belt. Left, right, and straight cut different curves and offsets. One pair is how you twist flanges.

Both. Saw on long runs. Snips on notches, copes, and the cut that is not worth the walk.
Can we snip structural CFS?
Sometimes for a notch. Production cuts on heavier steel are a saw. Interior drywall stud is the snips’ home.
