Boom lifts for wall-and-ceiling work
A boom reaches up and over. That is why a wall-and-ceiling shop rents one for an elevation, a soffit, a parking garage, or a high atrium — and why it is the wrong machine in a finished 9-foot corridor. Indoor commercial hang and ACT live on electric scissors. Ceiling board still wants a panel lift. Do not write “lifts” on the bid and hope the yard sends the right class.
This page is for commercial W&C PMs and supers. It is not a safety program and not OSHA training. Operator qualification, swing radius, and ground conditions belong to the shop, the manufacturer of that machine, and the GC. We name classes. We do not invent rates, model numbers, or a branch list.

Articulating vs telescopic, indoor vs outdoor
Articulating (knuckle). The arm folds. You reach up and over a canopy, a parked truck, or a bulkhead the scissor cannot see past. Common on exteriors and on atriums that are not a straight shot from the floor.
Telescopic (straight). The arm extends. More reach in a line, less weaving around structure. Typical on open elevations and high bays where the path is clear.
Fuel and tires. Diesel and rough-terrain belong outside or on an unfinished deck. Electric or dual-fuel classes exist where the site forbids exhaust. Confirm the condition at the counter: finished atrium slab vs muddy site, indoor emissions vs outdoor, slab loading vs dirt. A boom that marked the terrazzo is a punch item, not a production win.
Name working height and horizontal reach from the drawings, not a nickname we made up. Confirm the platform will hold the people and the tools you actually send up — hangers with board are a different load than a punch guy with a screw gun.
What a drywall / W&C sub actually uses it for
Exterior sheathing and soffits. Glass-mat and gypsum sheathing the wall-and-ceiling package hangs. See exterior sheathing. A baker will not reach the third-floor soffit from the parking lot. A scissor on unfinished grade is often the wrong tire. The boom is the outdoor reach tool.
High atriums and gyms. Gypsum lids and high walls the corridor scissor cannot cover. Floor loading, swing, and emissions still have to match an indoor space. Some atriums want an electric boom; some want scaffold. Site rules decide. This page will not override the GC.
Open decks and parking structures. Prerock, liner, and other envelope-adjacent board before the building is closed. Winter and moisture still apply — see winter hanging. A boom does not waive C840.
What it is not. Not a corridor machine. Not a panel lift. Not a forklift for staging pallets. Do not hang 4×12 ceilings from a boom basket because “we already had it on rent.” The hang sequence still wants the board on the joists or the tees, fastened to the listed pattern.

A residential crew that picks up a school gym should confirm indoor class and floor loading — a yard boom is not automatically allowed on the gym slab. A commercial shop that takes a tract of houses should not send a boom to hang 8-foot bedrooms.
Own vs rent
Booms are a rent-by-the-job class for almost every drywall shop. Owning one is an aerial business. The ticket lasts as long as the elevation or the atrium, not as long as the trailer.

Can a boom replace indoor electric scissors?
Not in a finished corridor. Different machine, different floor, different exhaust. Rent the scissor for TI hang and ACT.
Articulating or telescopic?
Articulating when you have to reach around structure. Telescopic when the shot is straight and you need the reach. Ask for the condition, not a brand.
Can we set ceiling board from the basket?
The hang still wants a panel lift or a proper walk-up for production lids. A boom is reach for a person, not a cradle for a 4×16.
Is this OSHA training?
No. Follow the manufacturer and the job’s fall-protection rules. This site will not write that program.
