Electric scissor lifts for drywall and wall-and-ceiling interiors

An electric scissor is the indoor machine a commercial hang, ACT, and punch crew actually rolls down a corridor. It gets a person to height. It does not set a 4×16 on the tees — that is a panel lift. It does not reach up and over a bulkhead from the parking lot — that is a boom. Mixing those three on one bid line is how you send a diesel rough-terrain scissor into a finished lobby.

This page is for wall-and-ceiling PMs and supers. It is not a safety program and not OSHA training. Operator qualification, fall protection, and floor-loading belong to the shop, the manufacturer of that machine, and the GC. We name classes. We do not invent rates, model numbers, or a branch list.

The rental hub is equipment rental. Reach next to stilts and bakers: scaffold vs stilts vs lifts.

Indoor electric vs rough-terrain

Electric scissors, indoor. Slab or non-marking tires. No combustion exhaust in the finish air. Narrow units for corridors, restrooms, and elevator cores. This is the default commercial-interior class for hang, ACT, drywall-suspension punch, and high wall work the GC will not allow on stilts.

Rough-terrain scissors. Outdoor, unfinished, mud, slope, an open deck before the envelope is closed. Different tires, different weight, often a different fuel. The wrong machine on a polished corridor is a floor-damage ticket and a GC conversation you do not want.

Name the condition, not “a scissor”:

Do not treat a 19-foot-class indoor electric and a rough-terrain deck machine as interchangeable because both go up and down.

What the drywall sub uses it for

Hang. High walls, bulkheads, and soffits where a baker is too short and stilts are banned. The sheet still has to be walked or cranked; the scissor is the person. Sequence is still how to hang drywall — ceilings first, fastener spacing, orientation.

ACT. Grid, tile, and punches in occupied corridors. Electric, quiet, no diesel haze over a lay-in ceiling. Drywall-suspension is still a gypsum lid; the scissor does not change tee orientation or the listed design.

Tape and sand. Level 4 / Level 5 in a tall lobby or a gym when stilts are off the table. Automatic taping tools still need a deck the taper can work from; some shops pair a scissor with bakers on the lower walls.

Punch. One compact indoor unit on a TI floor beats sending a boom through a finished door.

What it is not: a substitute for a panel lift, a forklift, or a connex. Do not stack board on the rails because the platform “had room.” Confirm the manufacturer’s load and the site rule.

Residential production vs commercial interiors

DecisionResidential productionCommercial wall and ceiling
Default reachStilts on finish and texture; panel lift for lidsElectric scissors, bakers, pump jacks; stilts only if the site allows
When a scissor shows upTall custom lid, a gym in a house package, almost never a tract 8-footerEveryday on TI corridors, schools, hospitals, high walls
FloorSubfloor the builder will acceptFinished or covered corridor the GC controls
Fuel / emissionsRarely an indoor combustion questionElectric indoors; keep RT and diesel off the finish floor
ACTUsually noneSame shop may own grid; electric scissor is the indoor ACT machine

A residential crew that picks up a school TI should bid indoor electric scissors even if the shop lives on stilts. A commercial shop that takes a tract of houses should not roll a scissor into an 8-foot bedroom because that is what was on the last floor.

Own vs rent

Most drywall shops rent scissors by the floor. The machine is on the job for three weeks. Owning a fleet of aerials is a different business than hanging board.

Some larger wall-and-ceiling shops keep a compact indoor electric for punch. That is a tool-crib decision, not a requirement. See production tools for what the trailer actually owns.

United Rentals is an editorial directory stub, not a rate card. Official site: unitedrentals.com. Use that company’s own location finder for the yard nearest the job. We will not invent a branch list, a phone, or a street. No rental affiliate is live. See the affiliate disclosure.

Confirm indoor electric vs rough-terrain at the counter. A national catalog is not a takeoff.

FAQ

Can we use a scissor instead of a panel lift?

No. Scissors get a person to height. Panel lifts set ceiling board. Rent both if the bay needs both.

Electric or rough-terrain on a TI floor?

Electric, indoor class, unless the GC and the floor condition say otherwise. Rough-terrain belongs outside or on an unfinished deck.

Do we need a scissor for ACT if we already have bakers?

Grid in a 9-foot corridor is often a baker. Taller lids, occupied floors, and long runs are where the electric scissor earns the ticket. Site rules still decide.

Is this OSHA training?

No. This site is not your safety program. Follow the manufacturer and the job’s fall-protection rules.

Are rental links affiliate links?

No. No rental affiliate is live. See the affiliate disclosure.
