Renting drywall and panel lifts
A panel lift is material handling. It is not a scissor, not a boom, and not a pair of stilts. The hang crew uses it so two people are not palming a 4×12 or a 4×16 overhead. Shops that hang every week usually own a production unit. They rent when the trailer’s lift is already on another floor, when a second crew starts, or when the bay is taller than the unit they own.
This page is for hang leads and PMs. It is not a first-time homeowner hoist guide, not a safety program, and not OSHA training. Follow the manufacturer of that lift and the job’s site rules. We name classes. We do not invent model numbers, rates, or a branch list.

What you are actually renting
Two classes show up at a rental counter. They are not automatically the same machine.
Production panel lift (Telpro-class / Panelift-class). Cradle built for gypsum board. Wheels into the bay, cranks or winches the sheet to the ceiling so the hanger can fasten.
Material lift / duct-and-beam class. Walk-behind mast that will raise a load through a doorway. Useful for duct, a unit heater, a beam — and, if the cradle and rating match, a sheet of board. Confirm it is set up for gypsum, not a piece of spiral.
Name this at the counter, in our words:
- Cradle vs stock. 4×12, 4×16, 54-inch horizontal. A lift that will not support the sheet without folding is the wrong lift.
- Height vs the bay. House work and many commercial interiors fit common production units. A gym, lobby, or high drywall-suspension ceiling is a different reach problem.
- Doorway and folded size. The unit has to roll through a residential door or a commercial corridor and fold onto the truck or the elevator.
- Tilt. Some shops set the first high wall sheet with a tilting cradle. Ceiling hang is still the reason you rented it.
- Floor. Finished TI vs dirty slab. Wheels that mark are a punch item.
The wrong lift for the bay is a finish-level problem you bought at the hang.
Not an aerial
Electric scissors get a person to height in a corridor. Booms reach up and over on an elevation or an atrium. Stilts and baker benches get a taper or a hanger onto a wall. None of those set a 4×16 on the tees.
Do not rent a scissor because the PM said “we need a lift for the lids.” Mixing those jobs is how a sheet walks into a soffit.
Shaftliner and area-separation board are their own handling. Vertical 10-foot stock on metal stud is often a two-person walk-up, not a ceiling crank.
Commercial drywall-suspension is not a house ceiling
On a wood-joist house the lift is a labor saver. On commercial drywall-suspension the board still has to be oriented to the tees the catalog and the drawings require. The lift does not change that rule.
Fire-rated lids follow the listed design. Fastener spacing is still C840 / GA-216. Handling is not a substitution.

A residential crew on a school TI should confirm reach and tee orientation. A commercial shop on a tract of houses should not leave the lift on the other truck.
Own vs rent vs the gypsum house
Own when lids are every week. Parts, wheels, and a dealer who stocks them beat a weekly ticket.
Rent the second unit, the high-bay unit, or the week the owned lift is in the shop. Rent the class that matches the stock length, not “a drywall hoist.”
Gypsum house. Board still comes from there. Some counters rent a lift; many do not. A national rental yard is a different counter. Neither one replaces the yard ticket for Type X.

FAQ
Do we rent a lift for walls?
Not as the primary tool. Walls are a walk-up or a bench. The lift earns the ticket on ceilings and on stock that is too long to palm.
Will one rental cover houses and a gym?
Confirm height and cradle on the unit you are actually picking up. High bays are often a different reach plan. This page will not invent a model that covers both.
Is a material lift the same as a panel lift?
Only if the cradle, the rating, and the tilt match gypsum board. Ask for the drywall / panel-lift class, not a generic mast.
Does the lift change fastener spacing?
No. Spacing is C840 / GA-216 and the fire design. The lift is handling.
