Drywall screw head types for hang, lath, and steel
Thread gets the screw into the member. Head is what the taper, the plasterer, or the steel-to-steel joint actually lives with. Bugle dimples gypsum face paper. Wafer clamps lath. Pan stitches track. Using the hang head on mesh, or the framing head on a Level 4 corridor, is a finish problem you bought at the gun.

Bugle — interior gypsum default
The bugle head is the interior hang head for Type S and Type W. The flare is meant to dimple the face paper: head just below the paper, core still supporting the face. Too proud and the taper is coating a bump. Too deep and the paper is cut and the fastener has no face to hold. Either way the joint or the field reads under paint.
C1002 wants a corrosion-resistant treatment that does not inhibit adhesion to finishing compounds or bleed through decoration. A deck-screw coating that kills mud bond is the wrong hang screw even if the thread is coarse.
Drive. Production drywall is typically a #2 Phillips recess. Worn bits cam out and tear paper. Depth-sensitive nosepieces exist so the head stops at the dimple. See drywall screw guns and how to hang drywall.
Bugle is wrong on metal lath (cuts or pulls through) and wrong as a metal-to-metal framing head (no bearing, ugly in a steel joint). It is the right default on paper-faced interiors, including Type X corridors, when the thread matches the framing.
Wafer and truss — bearing on metal and backer
Wafer, modified truss, and similar low-profile bearing heads clamp sheet metal, lath, and some cement backer without a deep gypsum dimple. Type A lath screws live here. Some cement-board fasteners use a ribbed wafer so the head seats on a cement face without spinning the backer off the wall — see cement board screws.
These heads are not a Level 4 gypsum finish. If you hang wallboard with a wafer head, you are either leaving a lump or burying a pancake. Neither is the bugle dimple the taper is set up for.
Pan and hex — steel to steel
Pan, flat pan, and hex-washer heads are metal-to-metal language: stud to track, clip to stud, hat channel, bridging. Light-gauge often takes a sharp point; heavier steel takes a drill point — self-drilling framing screws. Steel stud framing basics is the member conversation; this page is only the head.
Do not hang gypsum with a pan head and expect GA-214 Level 4. The head will photograph. Do not stitch 18-mil track with a bugle drywall coil and call the wall framed.
Hex heads show up on heavier sheet metal and some exterior attachments. Interior drywall hang almost never wants a hex on the face.
Trim — small head, different job
Trim heads are a small-diameter head for finish carpentry, some light-gauge to wood, and places a visible fastener has to disappear under paint or wood trim. They are not a substitute bugle for gypsum board. Driving a trim head into 1/2-inch interiors is how you punch a tiny hole with no paper support.
If the documents want trim-head screws, they are usually talking about millwork or a specialty attachment, not the hang pattern in C840.
Drive recess and coating
Phillips is the drywall hang default. Square and star (Torx-class) show up on framing and exterior wood screws. Match the bit to the recess. A worn Phillips in a square recess is not a system.
Interior hang coating is the C1002 treatment that accepts compound. Exterior and wet-area fasteners want the coating the mill names for that exposure — cement board, exterior sheathing, treated wood. Do not assume the interior hang coil is the exterior coil with a different head.
Fastener houses publish head families with their own names. Treat those as catalog geometry on the official site, not as ASTM type letters. ASTM types are thread (S / W / G / A) and the C954 drill-point hang class. Head is specified on top of that.
Commercial vs residential
Residential production. Bugle Type W, often collated. Wafer/cement-board heads where tile backer actually goes. Almost no pan-head framing on a wood house unless there is a steel furr. Trim heads are carpentry, not hang.
Commercial wall and ceiling. Bugle Type S (and S-12) on gypsum faces. Pan / hex in the framing pouch. Wafer on lath and some backer. Mixed-gauge floors need mixed heads on the cart, labeled. A corridor Level 4 is unforgiving of the wrong head in grazing light.
What to put on the takeoff
Name thread class and head family: bugle Type S, wafer Type A, pan drill-point metal-to-metal, ribbed wafer cement-board. Do not write “drywall screws” and let the yard send whatever head is on the shelf.

FAQ
Why did the heads photograph after paint?
Proud or punched. Bugle has to dimple, not sit on the paper and not cut it. Wrong head family (pan or wafer on a gypsum face) will read even if depth was “fine.”
Can I hang drywall with pan heads?
Not if you care about finish. Pan is steel-to-steel.
Is a wafer head a Type G?
No. Type G is a thread for gypsum to gypsum. Wafer is a head for bearing. Do not mix the letters.
Do proprietary head names replace ASTM types?
No. Still Type S / W / G / A or C954 for the hang class. Head is additional.
